I am planning a trailer rooftop tent, probably using a springbar tent for ease of set up. I have 3kids, a dog and my wife. We own a Maggiolina Medium for My bride and to sleep in. The Kids and the dog go in the springbar. Waitiung on my Trailer from Wayne Percival to finish. Looking to use PVC Boar and aluminum frame. ANYBODY HAVE THE PLANS.........for a foldiing box/ floor Thanks

Yeah, i took my Maggiolina to Baja .windy as it gets no problems.everyone on the ground was full of dirt too besides broken tent poles and being blown off the cliff

Check with Slee, I think he mentioned he had these tents on sale..? sleeoffroad.com

I really like your DIY idea.. i think that a rooftop tent could be set up really easily.. ive been giving it alot of though lately

my friends once built an entire awning for thier cabin cruiser.. sewed the canvas and windows in .. all the screens... they literally saved themselves hundreds and hundreds of dollars..

id like to do something the same with a rooftop tent..

ive been throwing some ideas around and i have some rough sketches, it is to fit ontop of my 70 series.

the idea i had was to have basically varnished mahogany 5/8 marine plywood base the size of the roof of the truck with another one the same size hinged at the front of the truck ... with heavy canvas sides that folded into the middle... it would look like a wedge when set up, and your feet would go towards the small side of the wedge, having your head at the big end. there would be difficulty getting the canvas to adhere to the floor and roof.. i was thinking about nailing strips or something... other than that, a small screen or two on the sides.. and a zippered door...

I too find $1600 to $2500 a bit rough on the pocket book for a tent.

Has anybody checked into “AirZone” tents? They use air tubes for support and claim to erect and come down in seconds. This tent may hold promise for a do it yourself roof tent. They seem to be reasonable priced. This is their website: http://www.airzonerecreation.com/index.htm

I'm not so sure about "reasonably priced".Their basic one season, two man tent starts at $300 before shipping. Kinda steep for what looks's to be pretty much a gimick. Looks to me like this tent should be priced comparable to the ones you pick uo at Walmrt or Costco.

The full rain fly is nice, but I gotta wonder how well it handles wind.

Three kids and a dog or two will fit neatly into an OverLand Large - 71" W X 87" L X 49" H. I have one on my trailer, and with two adults, it still has a LOT of extra space. Less money and weight that brand X.

FYI: I am connected, of course, with the company that sells these, and would not want to mislead anyone about this recommendation... just feeling a bit competitive today.

Wayne makes very nice trailers. He made mine a couple of years ago. Please post pictures of yours when it is done.

I would love to hear from someone who has seen one of these tents in person. The web site talks about them holding up well against the wind and goes into detail about quality, but it is their website!

I hate setting up tents, especially after dark or for a short period of time. The idea that it more or less sets its self up is appealing. Actually, I'm sure the main reason roof top tents are popular is because of the instant setup and take down quality.

I think if a good quality roof tent could be bought for a thousand dollars or less it would be a bargain. I would not be surprised to find that a home made roof tent would cost close to $800 or more when all was said and done.
