Hi people. I've been a reader on 'mud for quite some time but now it's time to humbly ask for some input. It looks like there is a good chance I'm going to move from Sweden to SC for work. I know diesels are a hassle in the US but you guys still seem to be able to convert gassers to diesels left and right. Anyhow. Is there any chance I can bring my 1996 HDJ80 (1HD-FT) and register it in as some type of "import exempt vehicle" or something? I know that doing the opposite is possible with special rules from the swedish DMV. Any input on this issue will be greatly appreciated!

I know that you can get temporary registrations for vehicles, that's how all the euro guys bring their unimogs over to tour North America. What exactly it involves, and how long it's good for, I can't tell you.

lycka till!

Are you gonna be here permanently?

For a short-term/temporary thing you should/might be able to as mentioned above.

But anything long-term it would be challenging. It has been done, but it's gray, and if you don't do a good job you could end up getting your rig confiscated and crushed.

There's a sticky at the too of the Diesel section here that's titled "Everything I've learned about importing, etc... " it would be a good read, if you haven't read it already.

Good luck!!

Anything long term it has to be 25 years or older to stay in the U.S. any thing newer can be brought in on a display only bond but will have to be exported within a certain time frame or the feds will come get it.

Anyone who tells you otherwise is lying. Even the military exemption is gone now.

Check out importavehicle.com (I'm not affiliated with them) they have a ton of legit information and what to look out for even importing a car or truck.

What kind of visa will you be on?

I'm a Norwegian guy currently living in Texas. On the visa I'm on and the other European on the base there is not any problem to have a diesel land cruiser with Texas plates for 3-4 years, or longer. You can not sell it to an American but no problems selling it to other on the same visa.

There is one 2001 hdj100 with man tranny on the base!!!

Could be different in other states!

And just like that, 10 years have passed since the first post and there is another 24v HDJ80 in SC…
