I purchased the 285/75/16 Revo tire on the recommendation of my trusted tire guy. Reviews on this site also weighed in on my choice.

Use over 43k miles:

40k of DD use in the valleys and mountains. Perhaps 4-6 weeks of driving in snow 2" to a maximum of 16". Some rain. 5-8k towing a drift boat.
3k off road fire trails, slick mud in orchards and one trip rock crawling on the McGrew trail.

Performance:

Road noise = low = Very good.
Sidewall stiffness = Good - Very good.
Rain performance = Very good at lower speeds Good at higher speeds. Very slight hydroplaining at 70mph over puddles on fwy.
Snow performance = Very good - good. As it got deeper performance fell off a little bit.
Fire roads = Very good to excellent.
Rock crawling = suprisingly good. Better than I expected with no chunking.
Tread life = Very good to excellent. They still had 15-20k left in them when I replaced them.
Tracking = Very good to excellent. On center feel was excellent and I noticed no wandering.
Overall = Very good.

Recommend? It depends. If you buy road hazard insurance, Yes. I really like these tires and prior to Monday would have bought them again. Read on....

History:

On my '94 Trooper RS I had two sidewall punctures with Bridgestone Desert Duelers. I switched to BFG AT's and had no more problems.

On the '95 FZJ80 I replaced the Michelins with the Revos. At 5k I had a sidewall puncture on the road, possibly on a dump run. At 43k I had another sidewall puncture while driving to pick up a client. The puncture was of an unknown source while traveling on the highway. I decided to try the BFG's again and this time I bought road hazard protection just in case.

HTH.

Thanks for the review

I'm leaning toward the Revos for my :princess:'s 80

Great DD tire. I was probably just unlucky with the punctues.

I am at 50K without any puncture issues on my Revos. I once discovered a dirty old hoe had let the air out of one of my Michelin LTXs through the sidewall once - but I don't think it was the fault of the tire. :)

You know...thats what happens when you disrespect them and try to cheat them after a negotiated price. Next time her pimp will do the other three tires.

There's no hoe like a dirty hoe. Would a clean hoe have done the same thing? :grinpimp:

I'm on my second set of Revo's and concur with all of your evaluations. I've also had one sidewall puncture, but only one, and I'm honestly surprised I haven't had more. The one puncture I did get was from rubbing up against a sharp stump.

If I weren't going to a more aggressive tire, I'd be getting a 3rd set of Revos.

43K on a premium AT sounds ~ 12K too few. Was this decision based solely on sidewall puncture?

Is there a NoNo I missed reading in the FAQ on replacing 1 of 4, or 2 of 4. tires on an FJ80 because of mismatched tread depth?

Did I make a mistake to have a sidewall-punctured Sears (Michelin) XCX APT repaired & getting another 20K out of it? I've gotten ~ 60K from 3 sets, on FJ62 (2) & Tundra, before swapping due to reduced traction on wet pavement.

I strongly considered Revos on the Tundra, but read a few too many posts (elsewhere) about Happy Owners replacing at <<< 60K.

No FLAMES intended.

Why would you change to a tire with outdated technology and design? (sarcasm implied)

I've also run BFG A/T's on ALL of my 4x4's and wouldn't go with anything else for an on road/occasional off road tire. They're on the 100 series, my old 80 series (LX450 my father bought from me), and my '95 Nissan Hardbody. They would be on my current 80 but I wanted some hardcore bias plies. They've all been through Moab and snowy and icy winters here in Utah. They've performed excellent for us.

Not sure if this was re: my ?

I'm not concerned about which tire replaced Revos, but if FJ80 :steer:s consider 43K acceptable on an 80?

Having sold Levis at a County Seat, circa 1975; I understand brand loyalty. I wouldn't be caught dead in Lees, even IF the mortician put them on me prior to cremation.:meh:

I 've had 285 Revos for about 60k of pretty easy driving on my wife's DD, seen some offroad action and many deep snows where I live here at 7000k feet ( yes, there are mtns in AZ). They are spent. When they were new I also put a stick from some creosote bushes through the sidewall. Only time that's ever happened. Can't say if it would've happened on a different tire. They were great tires, look good, sound good, and are a vast improvement over the Michelins. I just bought a set of Big O AT tires and have had some chunking from a recent trip to Silverton and they also seem to get rockes stuck in the tread more than the Revos. I'm going to return them and try something else...maybe go back to Revos?

The choice to replace at 43k was my choice. Reread my post and you will see that I thought they had another 15-20k to go. I asked myself if I were to replace the tires after another 15k would I buy the Revo's again. The answer for me was no. Therefore why spend $250-500 for one or two tires I didn't want again. Four new BFG's were $940 with road hazard. That made fiscal sense to me.

Why switch from a tire I like so much? Why not? If you don't try something different you will never know if you are missing something. In two years I will be able to go back to the Revo's, or on to the next great tire.:hhmm:

No, not intended towards you.

I think 43k miles on an 80 is damn respectable!

I got about 40k out of my last set and as anyone who knows me will testify, I'm not easy on tires. The last time my truck crossed the scales it weighed 6500lbs, so I was ecstatic to get 40k miles out of a set of tires, when I used to get 20-25 out of a set of BFGs on my old XJ.

THANX! My :princess: had shot the following link to me, which points out the date of mfg is on the tire. I'll soon be crawling under a couple of rigs to check.

As we're currently in a routine of only needing to fill the gas tanks on our 2 Toyotas once/month on avg, I imagine Tundra's will be more than 6 years old before tread depth or loss of traction on wet pavement will be noticeable.

As :princess: favors the LX as DD, fewer miles to wear concerns = 6 years for us. YMMV

Investigation reveals aged tires being sold as new - 5/10/08 - San Francisco News - abc7news.com

[Tangent ]Since the new look at KMart, er sorry sign still reads SEARS, I've noticed that they've gone thru 3 auto shop mgrs & the young salesman I bought 3 sets of tires from as well as all the old hands were gone. I stopped in once to check for new Michelin LT AT/2 & overheard the newest Mgr. conducting his business on the Co's Line as they seated me in his office. He evidently sells trailers on the side, when he can spare the time from working for KMart.[/Tangent]
