Well, this may be a common occurance for you all but I am feeling like Bert Monro on his 1929 Indian 45 Incher when he set the land speed record for under 1000CC motorcycles back in 1962 or so.

I hit 103MPH on level ground at 8,200 feet in a 1987 FJ60 with a mostly stock 2F. No rocket booster needed. The cruiser had been at the shop for time getting a new set of diff gears (4.56) and a carb tweeking. I already put an overdrive tranny in. The EGR system, air pump, cat converter and the stock air cleaner all went awhile ago. I run a K&N round air cleaner that pokes through the hood into a reversed air scoop sucking cool mountain air. I also upped the tire diameter to 32.5 inches.

Tried it out on the road from Taos, NM to Penasco. On a long flat straightaway I pegged the dial at 85 and had a lot more throttle to go. I had a "pace car" (my wife) with a real speedomter following me.

Now, you all may have accomplished this long ago but after nineteen years of crawling along in my FJ60, hitting 103 MPH was a big thrill. Accelerating in fourth gear on grades I used to take in third was also a thrill.

The FJ was suprisingly stable even with a full length roof rack. As you all know, the FJ60 is about as aerodynamic as brick. I was expecting some wander on the skinny tires (245 X 16 X 85) but it tracked well. I would not want to attempt entering curves at this speed. Nor will I continue hitting the throttle like this. I was curious what that 2F was capable of once unshackled.

I would love pics of your setup. I am thinking about doing something similar as far as air intake is concerned.

Overdrive tranny?

:eek::eek:

Yikes!!! You got more guts than I do. What other mods have you done to the engine?

Not all that much. Pulled our the air rail and all the assoicated plumbing for the EGR. Plugged the holes in the head, of course, with recessed hex bolts. Replaced the air pump with the billet pullley set-up that SOR offers. Getting that suffocating OEM air cleaner assembly off has really allowed the engine to breath at high altitude. Some owners insist this should make no diference for performance but I have to disagree. Tweaking the carb mix for high altitude by a pro racer makes a real difference. The 4.56 gearing with the 5 speed overdrive tranny allows for RPMs to build which produces enough power to attain higher speed. Unfortuantely, my tach is broken so I cannot report how fast the engine was turning to achieve that speed at that MPH.

I will post some photos as soon as I find my camera.

Overdrive tranny?

Hokie, i put the ORM 5 speed overdrive tranny in my FJ60 about 1995. This is the tranny Toyota put in the FJ60 for the Australian market (maybe elsewhere, I could not say). It is about 24 or 26% over direct drive. It also has a compound low first gear that makes using transfer case "Low Range" a rare occurance. One can start off in second gear from a stop light on level ground without tormenting the clutch. It is probably the single most useful upgrade you can do for an FJ60. At lower elevations, with the stock 15 inch wheels and 3.70 gearing the 2F engine will push that OD to greatly improve your milage at freewway speeds. You will cruise all day at 70 to 75 mph without feeling like you are being beaten to death.

wow a brick going 100 mph!

what was the point again? im baffled. when i want to do 100 i get in my nissan 240sx and head for the race track.

one love

For some reason I thought you wrote that you added overdrive to your four speed. I would love to toss on of the 5 speeds in my rig, but can't put down the cash for it right now.

I am looking into simplifying the intake system so that I can run a dual fuel (gas or propane) setup. and am very curious about your intake setup. I don't think I would cut my hood though.
Find that camera!!!

Assuming your tires are actually 32.5" in diameter, using one of the on-line gearing calculators says you were at 4250rpm at 103mph. An impressive feat by a 60 with a stock 2F no question. Not to demean the effort in any way, but I'd guess the thin air at altitude helped a lot.

I would routinely run my 1991 Fj-80 at 160K on the Pan Americana in Peru. It was stock with a 5 spd and 31.10.50.15 tires and level II armor.

3FE has 20 more horsepower than the 2F.

At highway speeds my truck always feels like it has more, I just run out RPMS too quickly....a 5 speed would be nice.

geez..i feel proud when i get mine going 75. :)
no doubt
actually i thnk closer to eighty five but still she starts scaring me that high

Top speed in my brick right now is about 45 MPH, due to the 4.88's in the diffs and 33's on the rims. but she sure goes slow in 4low!!

I took a 1990 Isuzu Trooper over 100 MPH years ago (being younger and dumber) and since then have felt little need for that kind of speed

I'd be more worried on how your gonna stop .... I've had a 60 and the brakes suck...... I cant even imagine going that fast, with the thought of stopping.

The only way my 60 would hit 100 MPH is at terminal velocity, when dropped out of a plane.
my big question is : Why?

I and most of the others would love to see some picturess of your rig.
