I have a 97 4runner that I just got a few months ago. I took it up a pretty steep trail and it was fine, then on the way down I noticed the brake light on the dash would turn on for a sec then off. It did this a couple times and I thought it was from the fluid reservior being at angle, but I it did it again on flat ground last night. Fluid level looks fine, does this mean its time for a brake job?
If so, what pads would you reccomend?
Thanks,

Having done a few brake jobs on my Toyota trucks and on other vehicles as well, I would stick with GTPs for the pads. I've had my fill of pulling and squealing brake pads from places like PepBoys, CheckerAuto, etc. Never had any squeals using the GPTs though. You can save some bucks by buying your shoes from these stores though and I've never had problems with them.

As the pads and shoes wear, you will notice a lowering of the brake fluid in the master cylinder (unless you keep topping it off).

With over 60K miles on my 1998 Tacoma, and also on a 1987 Toyota years ago, the brake shoes showed minimal wear; however, they did appear glazed a bit so I replaced them along with the cups and seals in the wheel cylinders.

Just my 2-cents.

It's time to pull off the tires and check the brakes. The float switch I'm sure is what turned on the brake light, weather it's going bad or the angle that did it.
