ok so I know I have a rear d70 and I finally found the BOM and typed it into the dana bom site... and came up with this but what does it tell me?

605311 1 is the bom

Axle Bill of Material

so does this mean I have a normal d70? not a "U" or "HD" or whatever? I'm thinking I have a boat anchor.

I've never taken one of these apart can anyone walk me through pulling the shafts to see if its a 35spline?

Thanks...

Zach

Zach-

It tells you, provided no one has messed with things, that you have a standard differential (open), a 3.07 gear ratio, and the Spicer part numbers for service pieces.

To remove the axle shaft, remove the bolts that retain it to the wheel-bearing hub and pull it out.

I will be very surprised to find out that it is not 35 spline. I am not aware of a Dana 70 that was 30 spline.

I do not think that you have a boat anchor, but you will need to run at least 42” tall tires to not be dragging that center section everywhere.....what are you really looking to do with this thing?

thanks for the reply... I bought this along with its dana 61 counterpart about a week ago. I know the 61 can be built with spacer but I cant find any options for this dana 70 for lockers and gears. I'm planning on building a buggy in the future so I'm slowly accumulating parts for it.

I've removed the outer bolts but it looks looks like there might be cone washers aswell? Should I wack the studs with drift to knock them loose?

You know that just cause it is 35" does not make it 35 spline right??? ;)

Here is a nice chart that shoudl make you feel better about lockers and gearsets.

As I understand it, the only real difference between the D70 desiginations is the setup kit (bearing types) the ring gears and lockers are all the same.

Now broach out your locker in your 60 and cut and re-spline that axle to fit. Find new bearings and wahla..your done:D:hillbilly:

Then you could have some trick cruiser axles...in big blue.

nevermind, ignore me:censor:

And watch pinions die ;)

I gotta take a pic of the difference in pinions between a cruiser and a D60/14 bolt...

:D

its actually 34 3/8s from the inner flange to the end of the axle. :) I was just showing the length so that someone might be able to ID from the length of the axle itself. I counted the splines. :)

I've been doing some searching all over the place and the more I look the more it seems like this D70 is the Bastard of the 70 family with the 3.07s I just cant seem to find options for it and when I stumble on info on it, its usually people posting questions about finding gears and lockers for it with no luck :(.

Id like to see it.

Actually I never really liked the idea of using D60 axles. But after going thru a few rear shafts and watching friends break polys...Im not sure anymore:princess:

The front axle seems plenty strong with 30spline longs, just under wieght of my rig the rear axle might not be up to task.

I had plans on moving up in tire size but had decided to stay with 37s and just run polys. If I do end up breaking the poly rears...I guess Ill start hunting for a d60 rear. But I hope for my sake that cruiser rear and polys hold up the beatings I put on them.

Get a 35 (or 40) spline 9" then

ok, I finally just nutted up and called Reider racing... no problem with gears/lockers for either my 61 or 70. :) The guy told me that you can baically run whatever you want with the 61 with the spacer and a dana 70 is a dana 70. All the 307 junk comes out and you just replace it whatever you want. $650 for a detroit for the 70 though... ouch.

Randy's seems to have lots of options for the D70

sorry mace... I'm not sure how many other ways you could have told me I was ok with this axle. I had it stuck in my head that since the 3.07 stuff was in there something was weird with the casting etc. I'm an idiot. Thanks for being patient while my head wrapped around the concept that everything could changed in the housing.

Guess you dont learn if you dont ask questions huh?

Man, I hate to bring this up to the top again but Gearman from Pirate Pm'd me back with conflicting info from what Reider Racing said... He seems to think that the casting is different and that there is no real options for "off the shelf" gears for it....

Back to more research! Every shop I call about it tells me something different! Seems like you should just be able to pull the old 307 junk and replace it with whatever you want...

Gearman knows his way around axles..

Is it the carrier or the centersection that is the issue??

If it is just the carrier, than replace it with an ARB and get whatever gear set you want...

It is not sounding like it is tho..

I guess I wont just let it rust in the backyard then... maybe there's hope. :) I've also stumbled on a few Hot Rodder/street and strip forums that find them somewhat desirable too.

Maybe my lump of coal will end up being diamond.

Yeah, its sounds like its the center section. The 61 has some support because the spacer is currently being made which isnt the case with this 70. Here's his exact quote:

"its possiable on the front but the rear you would be screwed unless you have a lathe and are good at welding on both of them you will need some spacers for the gears you have to make your own on the 70 and then you will need to machine the thrusts back on the 60 and 70 a-lot"
