ok, i have a '74 FJ40 and will be adding body armour in the future to protect the sheet metal from any serious damage - no it wont be a pavment princess, iv allready put MANY scratches in it but i just want to keep it looking respectable. so my question is how do i tie in stuff like rock sliders, front hoop and roll cage into my frame? i have been told welding directly onto my frame is a bad thing to do....what would the best way to bolt it in be? also if my cage is the width of me truck how would i tie this into my frame rails which will be narrower then my cage? pics would be helpful if at all possible

here's your answer on welding to the frame of a cruiser: https://forum.ih8mud.com/showthread.php?t=101956

as far as tying in the cage and frame, go to the upper right hand corner of the page and click on the "advertised vendors" link, METAL TECH is what your after.

yea i read that thread about welding to the frame and felt it didnt answer my question, i also want to know if there are any ways to fasten armour without welding to the frame.

thanks
Guy

bolt it if you don't want to weld..

Weld it. Get the elliptical plates from Metal tech or try to make your own. Right angle metal to metal joints tend to split along a point radiating from the corner.

Use a section of the same tube you fab your cage from to join the cage to the frame. Just use a couple of flat plates, weld one to the cage one to the short section, then bolt them together with the floor pan sandwhiched in between. (My camera is on loan or I'd take a picture for you.)

The Metaltech tube fenders are looking pretty good to me right now. I have their family cage in my 40 and it is nice. The pricing is also attractive.

IMHO sliders do not need to be tied into the frame. I just bolted a 2"X2"X3/4" piece of angle iron to each rocker panel. My ride for the Rubicon last weekend uses the same set up they took a beating and no body damage. I think there a few people on this board with similar set-ups.

wicked thanks rusty for the info, i took a look at another guys cage (totall i think?) and he showed me what you are discribing but pics would still be wicked....and with your sliders did you cut the rocker panel at all with those? i would be interested in seeing your pics of the rock sliders as well as my panels took a little abuse the other day. thanks alot for the info
