Friend of mine just bought a condo in Crested Butte and I told him about this little deal - while he was up there asking around, he found out that the mining company was scared to set up camp. They figured the locals would start shooting the miners.

Maybe we can offer the mining company $700 to buy the whole mountain back from them - they can write the loss off. :D

When it comes to mining companies, the BLM tends to roll over and take it from them. I live in the largest gold producing area in North America, most pf the permit, EIS, claims etc seem to go through no matter what. The mining industry has deep pockets and lots of political clout, the BLM is basically their bitch. They are coming off two quarters of record profits when gold was around $400 for a while there. They will need a lot more write-off's than a $175 capital loss.
