Bout to fly down to Sydney from Brisbane, take delivery of JDM BJ74 LX and drive it 1000km home. Going to visit my sister in Canberra whilst I'm in SYD, a 600km round trip split over two days. 300km there, 300km back. A couple of days later I'll make the pilgrimage back to sunny QLD.

A question was posed to me that I hadn't though of:

Do JDM cars run anti-freeze and therefore would I need to change it out for anti-boil, given the car is now in Oz?

From there I progressed to:

Would there be anything I would need to check/change before driving the car any long distances? Climate related differences particularly.

Coolant should be anti freeze, anti boiling and anti corrosion. Although some are anti corrosion only and it doesnt make much difference anyway.
When you get home, buy some Toyota red coolant(fullstrength not premixed) .You dont have to go to Toyota anymore, supercrap and all the others stock it now.

Your biggest danger will be a blocked radiator and bad radiator hoses/clamps.
Let it idle from cold for a while. You should feel the radiator hose get noticeably warmer as the thermostat opens after about 5 mins, certainly no more than 10 mins.(you can use this time to inspect the hoses, check fluids)
Go for a drive around the area where you are getting the car, drive it up some big hills with gusto and watch the temp gauge.
Then take it for a spin on the freeway .If nothing weird happens you should be ok to get you home.

Low transmission/diff oils.
The gearbox ,transfer case and diffs all have a drain plug and a filler plug. The filler is the uppermost and is also the level at which the oil should be on a level surface.
If its an auto check as per normal for autos, but it still has a transfer case like the manuals.

And of course check engine oil ,power steering fluid ,clutch fluid and brake fluid.
Hopefully the importer should have done all this for you.

I would put about 40 psi in the front tyres and 35-40 in the rear for starters, you can experiment with it on the way home.

The fuse box is down by your right foot behind a kick board if you have any electrical problems.
There is a diagram showing which fuse is which.I hope its in english LOL

The washer refill bottle for the rear window is behind a panel inside the rear of the vehicle on the RH side(drivers)
The jack and toolkit should be behind a panel in the rear on the LH side.

Good luck with it and take some pics to show when you get home.

Thanks Rosco, very much mate. Been a long wait!

See you on the other side.

If the truck has any wheel locks (theft prevention) make sure you have the key(s). Have a great trip!

Unless you are 5' 2" you will need pain killers for your legs.:D
Good luck.....

Don't forget to post some pics when you get a chance ! Congrats on your purchase mate - hope all is as expected when you get to Sydney!

Watch the copers on the way home!

Especially if your coming up the coast road!

Cheers

BJ74's go fast enough to worry about cops? I only need to worry if I am going through a school zone.:D
