Theres my beast. My fiancee has had her first taste of camping and she loves it (thank goodness). I've had this wild idea of making this into a convertible camper type vehicle. My original idea was to get a factory soft top and modify it into an expandable tent of sorts. Due to the tops design this is not really possible. Next, I was thinking of having a marine shop build a soft top to my specs, expansions and all. However, I haven't found a marine shop here in Japan yet...even though I am in a fishing community. Finally, the FRP. I've been dreaming (literally came to me when sleeping) about a pneumatic driven lifter system (have an on board compressor and 2.5L res) that lifts a modified FRP roof. Some other supports would be fashioned and fold down prison style beds would be used. I would also like to make extension rails out the rear and make a fabric enclosure for storage and foot space for the beds.

Any ideas on how to keep mostly stock lines while building some sort of convertible camper?

The more I look at the RTTs the more To like them... the only hang up is the FRP

Just did some searching on B2B web pages, they are mede in Chinn... rite down to the exact wording in the ebay ads

I would get a roof rack and tent supported by the front gutters and the rear bumper .
Leave the FRP right where it is ,waterproof , warm and legal. Take the roof tent off when not in use.

IMO ,get one where the vehicle can be moved in an emergency without having to fold the tent up.
The one in the top right corner would be great on a MWB

Rosco, any experience/comments on these two offerings from you neck of the woods?

No idea ,there seems to be a plethora of this type of tent hitting the market but I agree with Sniperx, probably from China. This site is the best to ask new camping product questions

.

Note ,they are only 1400mm wide,so a bit narrow for 2.

I have the same tent sold under a different name. I would say it is an okay tent for the price and the occasional camper. I will say that is has enough space for two average sized adults. It can accommodate very tall people too.

Bit the bullet and picked one Up with a skirt. Got it factory direct at a low price. I'll n a review and some photos, I may also start selling them.

Well...picked up a AIBA Works aluminum rack off yahoo auctions over here. 6 points of contact, 4 in the front gutters, 2 in the rear. Tents sitting in the port right now waiting to be picked up. Probably mod the rack and make it the bed for the tent and use the front half of the rack for actual hauling....

Should be up soon with pics....

Dad used to say NEVER, EVER marry a woman if you did not take her camping before. Very true

Picked it up yesterday....man...these are a lot lighter than I thought. Despite being sold from China, the box says ade in South Africa....should have seen the stink they made over that...and the ladder was in a box from Germany. Going to mount it up there in the next couple of days.

The install was VERY easy and would have taken less time if we weren't trying to mate two things that just happened to fit close. 2 people can easily heft it up there, one person can lift it with ease. The construction is rock solid. The floor is 4 aluminum beams running lengthwise sandwiched between two 2mm aluminum plates and vinyl coated on both sides. All of the hardware was true stainless steel hardware. The self pulling bungees inside are great. The PVC cover zips onto the base now rather than bungee'ing around it. The skirt slides into a channel easily. The ladder is simple and very strong. The main hinge is a giant slab of stainless steel with massive hardware on it. Its very well sealed and is meant to last. Despite buying it from China, the box was marked made in South Africa. When someone is inside you can't see any bowing and deformation can only be seen when weight it put on a single point, like a knee. The mattress is VERY fat and acts like tempurpedic stuff, its attached by velcro underneath. I've only found 4 problems, 2 of which are design. 1. There are some odd holes, like large pin holes, for some reason throughout. It must be part of factory assembly. The outer cover is well intact and very waterproof though. 2. The matress cover material is very thin and scratches easily. I have a few toenail marks already. A good blanket or handy wife would fix it in seconds. 3. Theres no instructions with the skirt. 4. The ladders a wee bit too short for my lift.

And just for fun, a guy who decided to submarine his Pajero LWB. Was on the way back from a mountain excursion with my Dad, visiting JP, and saw a Pudge sitting hood high in the big river below the road. Said, "Huh, always wondered what it looked like when you sub'd a car."
Went over to see what he needed to find two tired little Zukers high tailing it for help. They couldn't yank him out. So I rolled up and winched him out. Could have driven him away too if I had a couple more tools to pull the glow plugs and spin the engine dry...that and was on the way to take my fiancee to her parets house night before our wedding...was already late....
