First time diesel owner and want to clean the air filter. The right way. Help.

Since I don't have a 40, I can't help you. However, my wife and daughter both have a VW TDI and I use K&N filters. To clean, I'll spray it with a filter cleaner (every step is for both sides), wait 10 minutes, rinse with low pressure cold water. After it dries, thoroughly coat it with air filter oil, wait about 20 minutes and install.
Every new member receives the same advice--search is your friend. Go to the 40-series of the forums and search. There is a ton of good info there and you'll also be able to download the FSM. Good luck.
