Does anyone in this forum run biodiesel on their 100 series? The idea of making my own fuel is really intriguing and wondering if anyone has tried it on these engines or if they run a mix etc

Apologies. I just figured I might see more chatter about it in the forums. Most of that thread is 15+ yrs old and seems to be monstly 70 series chatter. I've been flirting with the idea of importing a 100 series and was hoping to hear more about FTE engines running bio

I have long added 5-15% “processed” vegetable oil (from a local grocery store fryer) to my ex-BJ70, BJ42 and HJ61. I did it a hand full of time in my HDJ100, each time about 4L per full tank of diesel.

I don't do it anymore because I no longer have a source to supply me with oil and, more importantly, I no longer have the energy and will to do it.

In any case, although I'd still do it, I'd be reluctant to add a large quantity of vegetable oil just because the HDJ100 pump isn't fully mechanical and has different sensors. It's not scientific... just a feeling.

were you "refining" the oil at all? or just pouring topping off a tank with it?

It had some traffic a few years ago.

There'll be other threads if you search.

For a while there was a separate section in the diesel tech forum for alternative fuels ( i think), so there'll still be threads to dig up

as with everything its about quality of the fuel

Biodiesel comes in all sorts of flavors and quality levels

I ran small quantities of it mixed with regular diesel years back in a VW

I have too much $$$ into other diesel engines to eff around with it

It's doable but better off replacing rubber with viton. Indirect engine is more forgiving, especially on fuel quality. First diesel engine ran off peanut oil. Takes time to clean the stuff / process and some money. Or heat wvo up and purge lines once done with diesel. Some folks even run off sump oil on a 2h!

From the fryer to the fuel tank book is a benchmark for reading.

I have met 2 types of veg oil runners, some just look at the car as disposable and watch how many k's they get, the other's want their car to last their life. If you want to keep your engine, it takes some commitment to set up properly.

I was very keen for a period, lots of research, but diesel is less than $2 a liter and I get average 10l/100kms on my 2h. Which is pretty good, by modern standards.

So I would only be doing it to save the planet, one little sanctimonious person, which is a teeny drop in the ocean considering all the other bs going on the world, like war, disposable crap, deforestation... Definitely don't think batteries is going to save the world, look how long your phone battery lasts for example. Diesel mechanic pointed out to me, "can you imagine an electric bulldozer!?"

'Green diesel' is the new black apparently. Nearly everything we hear is market driven. But by all means give it a whirl, bit of a hobby within itself again. Would be satisfying to smell of fish n chips or chicken. Try not to spill it and step in it!

I used the oil from the fryer for fries only (not the oil used for frying fried chicken -> to avoid animal fats).

  1. I let it rest for 2 to 4 weeks in a container. The large particles sediment at the bottom;
  2. By leaving the sediment on the bottom, I filtered it coarsely and poured it into a first 20-gallon barrel (never full);
  3. I let it rest for about 1 month or more;
  4. I passed it through 2 large 10-micron water separator filters into a second, larger barrel (55 gal);
  5. From there, I used it as needed. This tank could hold a lot of oil, which could stay there for a long time (ultimately, a last step to let the micro-particles settle to the bottom);
I also used to replace the fuel filter on my truck every 5000km or so.

My intention was to use vegetable oil because ... I could do it. Not to save money (although I've saved over $3500 over the years), not so much for environmental reasons, certainly not for the BBQ smell (well ;) ) ... maybe for the softer engine purr and to lubricate the pump.

My friends and colleagues at work had a lot of fun with it, and many of them still talk to me about it, even though I stopped doing it several years ago.
