So what is better off road? Bias ply or Radial and why?
 
My observation after running bias LTB's and now running Radial TSL's.
The radials have a much softer sidewall and really squish (lack of a better term) much
better than the bias ever did. I ran both at 8 psi.
On road it's night and day. My reason for going with the radials was that I have to drive to
trails and needed something that worked well on the road. Won't run bias again.
 
ya that's what I was afraid of, ordered my pitbull rockers today, they didn't have radials in the size I want so I got the bias, I'm hoping te weight on the 40 helps them conform.
I liked my trepador radials just wanted to go a bit bigger since most of the rigs I wheel with in connecticut run 37 or bigger,

I had 2 of the Pit-bull tire discount coupons, they expired in December. Check the date to be sure and call to see if they will still honor it. ;)

OH DAG.. i just dug out my coupon and you're right.. expires 12/31/10.. issued 10/2/10.. kinda LAME.. oh well SORRY.:doh:
 
They said try will honor the 25% discount, fall gathering was late enough in the year for them to be OK with it, just gotta send it to them.

Bias plys just need to be aired down more.

Assuming the same pressure, a radial will have more sidewall flex than a bias because its sidewalls have less plys. That kind of sidewall flex is easy to see, but not that important as far as offroad traction is concerned. It also makes a radial more susceptible to puncture.

The flex you can't see the the flexing of the tread block, which is really what matters offroad. Bias plys flex way better in the tread block and that allows them to deform over roads and grip uneven surfaces. Radials by design tend to stay flat on the tread block, which makes them good on the road, but not so good offroad.

The only thing bias is good for is offroad. On the road they suck.
 
tom are you gonna run beadlocks with your new lockers? I run bias ply TSL's on my zuk and the pressures( 4psi or less) i run to get them to flex would rip them right off a regular rim. On a side note I don't think that bias ply tires are as bad on the road as people make them out to be. Mine are not even balanced and I have no issues cruising on the highway safely at 65. I do notice that it takes a couple miles after it has been parked for the tires to warm up and get back into round. They are def noisy... but its a crawler not a luxury vehicle.
 
No I couldn't afford headlocks right now, got some sweet aluminum Mickey Thompsons cheap, i know some great alumi.im welders, figured I could have them weld on a DIY kit at a later date
