The light harness and chains pass real close to the center of movement of the hitch, so they can be run snug without hanging down on turns.
When it's rocky and nasty, I bungee the chain up close (and loosely) below the hitch, to add a few more inches clearance and to get the chains and cable above the bottom of the ball mount, so they can't possibly drag.
As you can see from the pic, the tongue jack will touch before anything else, on smooth terrain like that ORV park. The rear wheels of the LX and the trailer wheels are both at the very bottom of whoop de doos.

John, I believe the original poster is referring to chaining a truck TO a trailer, i.e. for towing the truck somewhere with another truck.
