I am new to Reno and need some advise on shops to have work done on my FJ40. What do you all recommend?
I am in need of front-end axle repair immediately and a couple other basic engine/mechanical issues to work out.
Thanks for the suggestions.

Just my 2 cents worth. Your better off learning how to do that kind of stuff yourself if you plan on wheeling much. With time and a manual and this site, you can do most work yourself--and then if you break on the trail or in the boonies you cant fix it your self.

In general I agree with Krusty, but I understand if you just want to get the truck running.

For general automotive the only place I take my FJ40 is Martins Automotive.

For alignment work I use Sunshine automotive. (Truth is you can do an alignment on an FJ40 in your garage with a tape measure. The only adjustment is toe.)

The reason I ask what was wrong with your axle is the most common problem is leaking front axle seals. Replacing the seals and re-packing the Birfield joints is part of routine maintenance on the FJ40. It is well worth the time and effort to learn to do the job yourself.

If you do decide to have a shop do the work ask them to use Marlin seals, they are a slightly different design than OEM and last much longer.

I agree that doing the repair myself is the better way to go. I looked at marlin crawler web page. Says they are out of the repair kits. Where do I find help with how to do the rebuild? What manual were you referring to?

You will need the factory service manual, the chassis one, not the engine one.
Send me an e-mail and I will send you an electronic copy. I think you have my e-mail from the TLCA website, otherwise just send a Private message with your e-mail in it.

Check with Kurt at Cruiseroutfitters for the service kit
