What do you guys recommend as the best plug wires for the 2F? Mine's an
87 model and desmogged.

Thanks.

OEM OEM OEM OEM OEM. There inexpensive and made specificially to match. I like them. Of course I buy Toyota oil filters as well. Hell, I just buy OEM cause I get a good discount.

NGK are good too.

OEM, they are the best. great quiality, they are # for each plug, sized correctly for length, come with the looms.

Good luck with those HGK's(or whatever) I had a set on my 80 series......the boots melted to the plugs.........

that's why you go OEM!!!!!

NKG, NGK, HKGs.

I'd say you can't go wrong with just about anything, as long as it's not the no-named brand from an auto parts store. I bought a cheap set for my Corolla a few years back and every few months I'll be driving along and the car will start running like crap and on 3 cyls. I'll freak out for a few minutes, raise the hood, check the wires, and one of the damn things is broken - for no real reason at all. I got the AutoZone lifetime guarantee, so I take it off, get another car, take the stupid thing in and get a new one...we hardly ever use that car, but still...

yep thats what they were, NGK. might sound like no big deal to have the boots melt to the plugs but when you only have one car(as I did at the time) and are just changing the plugs and all the wires are toast(as in no ends).......it makes running out to the store a real PITA to pick up some good wires. I was suprised as NGK's should have been good

$50 for NGK or the same or less $ for OEM........easy to me to do the math ;)

got a set of OEM plug wires off the 90 fj62.......they had 240,000 on them when I replaced em......and they still were wtihin specs.

OEM ???

Interesting, I replaced wires 20k ago with OEM. Scoped it last weekend and wires 1 & 6 were almost out of spec. KV resistance @ 15 ??? All this specific techie stuff is a little over my head but my mechanic refered me to get a new set of wires. Asked me where I got this crappy set ???

Could the set of wires have been on the dealer shelf to long ?

They are Yazaki.

Is there a warantee or how long should a new set of OEM's last ???

Cheers,
Cahil

odd, but one year warantee on all OEM parts. I can;t think of one single Toyota part I got that has not been good(or i have had to return ever).......and I bought $6K worth last year alone, I am sure it happens however.

Yazaki sounds right, they will be black and numbered(on both end I think)

Thanks Landpimp,

Bought the wires back in March this year ... will check with the shop who installed them. This will be interesting because they no longer use a scope because of all of the computerized autos these days.

Being that 1 & 6 had the high KV resistance ... the only thing I can think of is that 1& 6 are the longer wires. Shouldn't matter ...

Cheers,
Cahil

P.S. Yeah you read right, 20k since March.

How do i check to make sure the wires are still working properly and giving the plugs the juice they need?

I found an older style shop/mechanic who uses an *outdated* Snap-On Ignition Scope. Not a trivial piece of equipment. These scopes originally were ~ $20k. Nowadays, they can be had, rebuilt for ~ $2k.

The Scope had a bunch of ignition tests that he performed. Everything was hunky-dory until the KV reistance test where wires 1 & 6 failed. It was pretty facinating. The scope enabled him to kill-out cylinders individually, check electrical patterns, chech the alternator for wear-n-tear, lots of neat stuff ...

I'd either try finding an older shop/mechanic or a quickie tune up shop might have older equipement of this type. Ask too, don't just assume the mechanic has the tools to get the job done.

"Which Scope do you use ?" Shops that got'em ... are prowd of 'em.

Cheers,
Cahil
