Wanted to see if any of the wiring experts out there could help me. Got some of these led headlights from @Racer65 but can't get them to work. Replacing sealed beam halogens that work just fine. If i install both of the new led lights, neither come on. If I have one of the old lights and one of the new lights installed, the low beams work on the led but not the high beams. I have tested the connectors and have 12.5v at the high and low beam wires when appropriate. Does anyone have any other ideas what might be going on? Thanks in advance
LED bulbs are, by definition, polarity sensitive. Is it possible the wiring to the ground and positive are somehow reversed? Or connected to the wrong tabs? Halogen and incondescent bulbs aren’t polarity sensitive.

I’d bench test bulbs, figure out if they work, and how they need to be connected. Once you know the connections to make them work… make sure that’s how your rig is wired.

I’d highly recommend Phillips XULED H4 bulbs as a replacement to halogen bulbs. Here’s an example of how they work:

Both in rectangular Hella DOT euro pattern glass headlights. Same rig, both taken the same day and time.

Correct wiring of plug.

Thanks everyone. I don't think it's a polarity issue. Initially I thought it might be a wiring issue on the vehicle side - I recently purchased this and it was restored, but I know they had to put in a new harness - it's a 1978 harness put into this 1982 - and I have found a couple of others things that were wired wonky. But in checking it, appears to be correct- ground is ground and grounded properly and high and low beams have appropriate voltage when on high and low respectively, so everything seems wired correctly. If a resistor issue, then it's with the lights themselves.

Bench testing them is a good idea, a friend of mine suggested that too, so that will be the next step. I'm beginning to think it may be the lights.

I also ordered the Toyota h4 upgrade kit that was mentioned on here and may just ultimately go with that

So these just came out. I know lots of people have been looking for modern LED lights that retain the classic look. They're not cheap (like, insanely not cheap) but seem to fit the bill.

Slight hi-jack, but it seems like converting the front turn/running lights on my '80 40 series to do double duty as fog/off road lights might actually work... has anyone seen such a mod?

I put in two sets on left hand drive 40's. The kit will work on either. There is enough wire for a 60 series so I bet it will work on longer body 40 series also.

Does anyone know if these are RH drive suitable?
Looking to buy a couple of sets for my ute and SWB
Thanks

Not sure that number would work for RHD . The cutoff on the lights goes up to the right which would be into traffic on RHD countries. I could be completely wrong on this though.

I’d suspect that also…

I dont understand your meaning of this statement. Can you clarify a little more?

I’ve not installed mine yet, but the lens design looks similar to the Hellas I’ve run for 25 years now. The cutoff line on low beam slopes down on the left, is level for the centre 85%, and then goes up on the right (there’s also a brighter section on the right to illuminate the shoulder).

If you were driving on the right side of the road, it would blind oncoming drivers. Meanwhile it wouldn’t illuminate the left hand shoulder to see the cyclist with no light in dark clothing.

Although, as stated in my post above, I haven’t installed mine yet… but I believe that’s what he’s getting at.

as @bikersmurf stated, yes the light will be blinding for oncoming drivers in RHD country with this part number.

Not the same lights, but this is what they look like.

The part number above would look like this. Lights flaring up to the right.

For a RHD country, like this.

Interesting, I see what your talking about now. I just did the Toyota light conversion. I noticed that the low beams do have an upper limit/line of light in them, which the regular halogen sealed beams/bulbs didn't really have. Couldn't this alignment issue be adjusted at the headlight bucket? Are each of theses newer lights/bulbs different from 1 side or the other? Heck when I installed the h/l buckets I never kept track from which side each one came from. I just stuck them in along with the bulbs. I assumed it didn't matter which side the bulbs or buckets came from. I'm still in the process of aligning my lights to where I want them. I did the alignment 1st on a garage door, but there's still a little real world tweaking I want to do. These lights are much better than what I had in every way.

On both my sets the right side of the glass has a portion of clear glass than is just a touch higher that the left side portion. (Look from driver perspective). 9A little over mid way up in the pic.

Each side is the same.
I never thought of the difference that would be between LHD and RHD.
Learn something new every day.
Must be a different part number for RHD.

I might compare the above picture with one of my sealed beams, l have been told they suit both LH and RH by a supplier🤔
Sealed beam usually don’t focus the light enough to have that much difference.
