Look familiar Mike?

I went thru an episode getting a replacement case, so long story short I had your cracked case tig welded back. There was actually 2 cracks on it. Didn't know if you or Glenn caught the other one. Anyway, I upgraded it a little to with a 78'-up nose cone as I had one and it is stronger and has a fine spline front output. I have ordered a new top mounted case saver, and a new nose cone saver with studs. It also got all new gaskets and seals. We will see how long it lasts behind the V8, then I will get an Orion.

Glenn,

I was able to get the preload on the bearings to 6.5 lbs. using a fish scale. I know spec is around 8 with new bearings, but since these are old do you think it will be ok? If not, I need some more shims as i have used all that I have.

Thanks,
Jeremy

i was almost scared to click on this thread. i thought maybe you had an upset stomach and was waiting to see if something came out of that was well.. not suited for this site. Sort of like Brock's face.
Isn't going to last too long behind that muscle. Good luck with it.
PS, I didn't see the second crack

Yeh, I know. There are others that have had luck running the stock case behind a V8, and I have taken every precautionary measure I can think of to prevent me from having a split case. The top mounted saver should help with the twisting of the soft aluminum housing under load, while the nose cone ring will help keep the hi/lo gears from pushing the front nose cone off. I have also previously spent a lot of money on the best driveshafts I could find. A lot of busted cases come from poor driveline angles binding up, or not enough slip in the shaft. I have plenty of slip, and the u joints are Toyota joints that have been clearanced for extra angle.

We'll see, it's not like we have anything hardcore around here that I will be driving up for the next year. Atleast until Tellico opens back up. I am really just putting this in here because I am still not 100% sure I want an Orion. Figured I would drive it some and decide how I want to strengthen the driveline and get lower gears. A 2.28 toybox with an Orion would be the ultimate, but Marlin isn't producing any right now. So it might just be the Orion at X-mas for now.

Jeremy i have a few shims if yo want to tighten it up a little. Trade you for a clutch fork pivot ball.

I'll get you that pivot ball this weekend when I am home. So you don't think it would hurt to tighten it up a little?

I thought you had an extra housing.

I did, but it was a 3 speed housing and they are too narrow for the 4 speed gears. I then found another housing for $30, but it turned out to be a 3 speed as well. Got my money back though. I finally found one, but the guy wanted $130 for it because he said SOR wants $250 for them and his is worth that. I said I will pass and just got it welded for $60. Bought a gasket set from Glenn for $40 and added a few of the upgraded pieces I had. So it's a $100 transfer case, not too worried if it grenades on me.

6.5 should be ok, along with using the fish scale i like to also get a feel for the amount of pre-load with my hand, shut up mike your nasty.

Well I did that as well and it felt like it had consistant resistance. It probably could use a little more preload, but I am not planning on running these bearings for 50,000 miles so it might be ok.

The idler shaft did have a little wear on it though. It had 2 small wear grooves on it. If I get any noise from it it will probably be from the idler shaft not the main shaft.:meh:

Thanks,
Jeremy

I could have a field day with that one.
