Took the family to Assateague Island National Seashore last weekend; we camped on the beach Friday night in the wind and rain, and then played all day Saturday.

I paid the big sticker to get the Over Sand Vehicle (OSV) permit, which gives one access to about 20 miles of beach. First ever beach driving experience--it was fun!

looks like fun!

we're headed to obx this summer and we'll be taking 2 cars, her sensible car and the '80 so we can play in the dunes north of Corova

I was in OBX this weekend as well, didn't have the LuCy and I could definitely feel the beach calling our names!

Apparently I need a geography lesson but nonetheless I wish I was driving on the beach...

? nothing wrong with your first post.

we were there end of 2009, and did an off-road tour (wild horses, up through the dunes, on beach too up to state line with VA) it's not wide open, there are residences around off the beach, and the beach itself is narrow.

there is more "lotsa people" down near cape hatteras if you're looking for a park and fish/picnic type of location. the beach driving between Corolla and Carova more like the "highway" connecting the two towns.

I've been going to the outer banks since '85 and I have stayed, drove one the beach, visited, day trips, week long trips, kayaked, and fished from the VA/NC state line to Hatteras. My favorite spot for kayaking, fishing, and a lil beach driving is a spot called Canadian Hole just north of Buxton. There you have a lot of water wind sports. Kayaking is good because you can head north from there and enjoy the tall grasses and flat water (beware of snakes though). Fishing is hit or mis but fun just the same. the beach driving is short but still fun. While you are there you can watch all of the water/wind sports. Great entertainment.

Second favorite spot is Carolla beach area. The beach driving is typically easy here but the wild horses and additional wildlife is incredible. Typically this area is not as crowded as say Oregon inlet. With that said though I love to go down there and watch as the charters come in from a day of fishing and watch them unload all the fish and so forth.

The spot you call Canadian Hole used to be fantastic weakfish fishing grounds, dawn and dusk, accessible only by a narrow trail. Then for tourism's sake, they put in a road and a parking lot. Poof - the best sound-side fishing spot gone, unless you want to snag a windsurfer. One of the many great things at Hatteras now gone/restricted since my first trip in '75.
