For about a month, I have noticed my 60 is making a grinding noise when I am starting it, during the cranking process, once started, it sounds normal, any ideas of what could be making the noises?
You have broken teeth on your driven gear. (The big gear that connects to the starter gear.) The grinding occurs when the teeth are misaligned just so. It is fine to keep driving the rig but it'll get worse over time and eventually it won't start because too many teeth will have broken off and the gears will just be jammed. You could drive for years and years like this without any problem besides the occassional god-awful grinding at start up.. Hopefully you'll need a new clutch before that happens so you can do it all at once since you have to take out the clutch to repair the driven gear anyways.
This tends to happen if someone triesto start the truck while it was already running.
Mine does that too. Ive noticed the teeth on my starter are wearing down but the flywheel is in good shape, so yeah could be either or both. Just pull your flywheel cover off and spin it while checking the teeth with a flashlight and pull your starter to inpect the teeth on it. I havnt done anything to fix the issue on mine cause like it said in the earlier post it seems to be cool for the most part if your willing to hear that noise from time to time.
