I'm nearing the completion of my AXT turbo kit on my 1986 CDN BJ70. The exhaust pipes supplied with the kit are much bigger then my stock pipes, so I'll be heading to the muffler shop for a 3" mandrel bent system.

So my question is, where is the best place to route the exhaust?

From the AXT diagrams and the stock (not sure if that’s the original) it looks like the exhaust is routed outside the frame on the passenger side. I'd like to have it routed straight down and between the frame rails.

An AXT expertise would be greatly appreciated.

I don't have an axt but I pretty much have the same garrett turbo. I had my exhaust routed just inside the frame rail and then angled over following the same exit with a turn down. I don't know how much room you'll have with a 3". My custom exhaust guy said no problem with 2.5 and like it so much better than outside the frame rail like stock.

Great. Thanks for the information.

The AXT piping is huge, but it only comes with the pre flex pipe section. I'm going to get it routed inside the frame rail.

I just finished a 2.5" exhaust on my BJ74. I looked at the inside the frame route but it looked as if there was a lot of interference: vacuum for t/c, fuel, brake and rear heater lines. I chickened out and just followed the stock route. Anyone figure out if a pipe can fit between all the obstacles?

No luck for me as far as the AXT kit goes. The down pipe from the turbo interferes with the exhaust manifold. The 3" pipe has to go on a 30* angle to the outside of the passenger frame rail.

Running a straight pipe for now does not seem much louder then stock. The turbo spool noise is quite a cool sound.

just bag that axt piece and take it to a shop. They can flare the flange and use a mandrel bend off the turbo and route the whole system inside the frame rail.
