I'd use a 90° pull De-Sta-Co clamp top and bottom.

I'll also suggest that the tailgate fully 'nest' or have a 'V' section at/near the latch end that mates with a matching shape on the trailer. This will support that trailer side and keep it from vibrating going down the road.

Not sure how to build the "nest" ? Not sure if I can picture this? Thanks and by the way you did a very nice job on your trailer. Did you build you tongue box?

By "nest" I mean to do something on the gate that interlocks with the side when latched shut to make the side and gate rigid. Just a piece of 1/2 X 1/2 thick walled angle welded to the front side of the gate with the corner pointing forward, that fits into a matching angle piece will do it. Some tapered pins into holes would also work, but in this use I wouldn't suggest that.

That, or gusset the 'flying' ends of the sides so they're rigid (not easy to do).

Good points. You wouldn't by chance have a picture of gusset the "flying" ends would you?

Nope. If there is a tube under the bed at the tailgate picture it extending out to each side, say roughly to the width of the fenders. Now add a tube running from the top of it up and in to the top of the bedside. How rigid this will be depends on how tall the tube under the bed is. If its an inch tall the bracing tube is probably pointless. If that tube is 6 inches tall then that bracing tube will do a lot.
