Bottom line up front I am having some locker-related issues with my GX. I called Torque Masters, and they were very helpful, but sent me a very exhaustive list of issues that can potentially cause problems. I am writing this to try and phone a friend to see if someone else has had a similar problem to potentially narrow it down a little.
I had the locker installed on my 2005 GX470 a couple months ago by a local shop. Prior to this I had installed (myself) an Iron Man Foam Cell Pro lift kit including UCAs, front struts, and rear shocks and springs with an airbag delete kit. It has 255/80/17 tires with factory wheels. Truck was bought with 93K on it in what appeared to excellent condition.
When the shop installed the locker they informed me that the truck made a thunking sound, in addition to the clicking sound of the locker ratcheting, when it turned hard, usually when it turned left. They told me this was a normal part of locker operation. Sure enough, when taking a hard left turn the rear of the truck would make a loud THUNK, that would vibrate the vehicle slightly, and then I would hear the click-click-click of the locker ratcheting. I thought this was normal.
Last Saturday, a couple thousand miles, and some light off-roading later, instead of ratcheting when I do a 90-degree left turn, it goes THUNK-THUNK-THUNK-THUNK at the same rate that it would usually ratchet, with no audible ratcheting sounds. When I turn right, I hear the ratcheting sound as per normal. Has anybody else had this happen to them? Before I start trying diagnose (or losing money so someone else can diagnose) everything from faulty alignment, to wheel bearings, to drive shafts, axles, axle housings, tolerances inside the locker, etc. etc. etc. Does anybody have a clue? Thanks in advance.
