Got a little garage time today. Painted bottom and sides of frame. Using a product called Chassis Saver. It’s a rust inhibitor with 2 pounds of aluminum flake per gallon. Supposed to cure with the humidity into a hard finish. Missouri has incredible humidity right now, so should be curing well.

It can be top coated. Thinking of leaving it silver. Was reading landcruisermans build thread and he was talking about a silver chassis. I see he’s gone to black though. Will see if it grows on me.

That would be a no. Wife wants blue, so blue it will be. Originally this was to be her pig, so I still ask for her input on color, interior, a/c etc. I just want to drive it, been awhile since rolling in a 55. :)

I’m still disassembling the body shell. Getting dash out, vents, steering column etc. I pulled the valence off that covers hood hinges and wipers. Underneath was a little debris, not much though. I did find a penny underneath it all. Date was 1978. Wondering if original owner dropped it in there when they bought the 78 cruiser?

Got the rest of the frame painted except the top frame rail. Impressed with this product so far. Had to use a hammer and chisel to get can open after setting a bit. Seems to be adhering very well. Will do second coat in a couple of days. Doors open for ventilation, tunes cranked up enjoying a paint buzz. Sure my liver is saying WTF (why the face ), haven’t we done this before? Looking forward to flipping frame over and finishing this stage.

Just came across this thread, you’ll like the OM617a/H55 combo. Definitely swap in the 4:11 diffs, the short 1st gear and too tall 2nd without having the turbo spooled will drive you nuts at stop signs with the 3:73s. You really don’t want to go 75mph in a pig anyway ... trust me. You’re going to have to notch the lower oil pan to have enough diff clearance, going to be tight w/o a lift. Good luck on the build and glad to hear the wife is doing well!

Tucker, thanks for chiming in. I’m aware of the oil pan issues, will address it when doing mock up. Doubt I’ll be doing 75, just used that number for RPM calculator. Original axles with the 4:10’s are getting reworked with rears getting discs. Slowly working toward some road time.

Spent a good two hours cleaning out the rest of the wiring, dash components, getting it empty. Feels good to see progress.

This is all of the rust through on the floor that I have found. Driver side front mount, pass side front mount, and under passenger side of seat.

This pig has been off of the road since 1990. Sat at Classic Cruisers in Salida when Merle still owned it from 1990 until 2011 when we got it. Dry high desert air was good to it.
