As many of you know, I own a 1966 Cobra replica and have been very involved with that hobby here in Houston since this time last year. Just as with Cruisers, there is a devout club of enthusiasts in every major city in the US. There are a number of similarities between the two, one of which is the desire and ability to be charitable. To that end, I am calling on all my Cruiser bretheren as follows:
The Houston Cobra Club is entering its second year supporting Operation Comfort which is a San Antonio-based charity that supports the Brooks Army Medical Center burn unit soldiers returning from war and needing rehabilitation. OC is a dynamic charity, and one of their primary offerings is through a program called Automotivation. If you hit the website, you'll find all the details. The bottom line is these are soldiers who have made a tremendous sacrifice for all of us and many of them are able to rehabilitate at the Automotivation shop wrenching, welding, hammering, sanding and painting on their project cars. They are actively involved at the SEMA show in Vegas and this is a really exciting, one-of-a-kind program.
This year the Texas Cobra Club and the Houston chapter have secured a complete Cobra kit from Lone Star Classics in Dallas that we will be giving to the soldiers as a Christmas gift on December 12. Along with the $25k kit we have secured most of the ancilliary items (tires, wheels, battery, powertrain) needed to them build and finish the kit. Once they finish it the car will be auctioned off for proceeds for the charity.
I know that LSLC lost its charity with the Haven House. Unless other decisions and pledges have been made, I am asking all of you to consider getting LSLC involved with Operation Comfort on an annual basis as a supporter and by all means, attending the December 12 event in San Antonio. As you'll see on their website the soldiers are into offroad vehicles and I think they would enjoy knowing and receiving visits from those of you who would like to participate in their activities.
Please try and join us on December 12. There will be a thundering crowd of 50+ Cobras on-hand giving rides to the soldiers and it will be a great day. Dan Pastorini, ex-Oilers quarterback will be on-hand in a Lamborghini supporting us as well. And if you guys decide LSLC wants to get involved supporting OC, I can arrange a conversation with the director, just let me know.
Guys, I know most of you very well and I can tell you, THIS is the type of thing Lone Star Land Cruiser needs to be involved in. We are all diehard patriots, we love working on cars and trucks, and we love making a contribution to a good cause. THIS is a good cause. Butch, Kowboy, Jeff Murrah, Chris, all you guys....let me hear from you on this.
Thanks,
Jim
