Sorry if The answer to this is posted, but I’ve looked - and can’t find one small detail that I need to know when checking the ATF fluid level on my 2007 GX470 (Canadian with 185000 KM, Dealer has done 2 drain / fills in the past, I used Maxlife Full Syn).

I swapped out the fluid today, initial drain followed by 4 x pump out / pump in from the front oil cooler lines. I had practiced beforehand with the OBD jumper cable, and gear shifting to put the car into atf temp check mode, but when it came to the actual temp check after the change, I realised I didn’t know if the engine was supposed to be running when pulling the level plug.

My ATF temp light came on solid to tell me I was at the right temp, I switched the engine off, popped underneath and unscrewed the level plug. More fluid came out than I was expecting, I had overfilled by about half a litre on the last fill, but about 1.5L came out of the level plug.
Should I have done this with the motor idling ?? Is the level significantly different with the engine off ?? I’ve read many accounts of people doing this, but couldn’t find a mention of engine on / off when pulling the plug.

Input appreciated.
Thanks

Jonathan.

Much appreciated. It’s still up on the ramps, so off with the atf cooler hose, pump in a couple of litres and I’ll try again. ! Thankyou.

Keep the truck level...meaning, if it's on ramps it needs to be on four ramps, not just two...
