would you?

if you did would you do it yourself or have a PRO do it?

is it true that consumers can't get the oil based stuff that the pro's can?

I have about 7K sq feet of black top and got quoted $425.00 for the whole thing, I think its a good deal but don't know s*** about the industry.

I do mine. Takes 25 gallons and a couple days to dry to drive ove and a couple more to be able to park. My drive is 65 feet long double wide. Messy as hell but easy to do. Get the brush with a squeegy on one side. Don't get the cheep stuff. Get the best your hardware has and plan on doing it every three of four years if you live in a mild climate. MAke sure to fill all cracks well. I do mine every two. Dig in.

Hey..I just went through this over the past few weeks. My driveway was a fraction of yours, but having done one about this size before...I didn't hesitate to get some bids. My bids ranged as follows, $460, $350, $175, and $160. Since there is only ONE freaking company in town that supplies the oil and hot rubber, i knew the high bids were full of sheeeet! They two person team showed on Friday afternoon and made quick work of the driveway. First they edged the driveway with a power edger. They brushed the driveway next with a hand held sweeper, then blew it with air. Next they swabbed in the hot rubber in various cracks, spackling it in like drywall mud. Then the dude used a wicker broom to brush in the sealant in and around the porch steps and garage door. I thought he would do the whole driveway that way, but that was just cause the actual sprayer was messy in the wind. In all they were there a little over 90 minutes in 90 degree weather.

I surfed the web the whole time. Best $175 I have spent in weeks. The materials alone would have cost me $100 at home depot.

Get a bunch of bids before punching the ticket. Some of these folks really gouge...

I did mine a while back:crybaby:

It sucked and the materials cost me more than to have the local dude do it.

Oh well live and learn..

So based on size would you say that 425 is a good price? If you paid 175 and it was a fraction. Yaa the other attraction to having a pro do it is the stuff they apply is hot and I don't have that type of gear nor do I want to spend all day out there with a squeegee and roller. Course convincing the wife to do it at all will be a real PITA..............

Ok...I think my driveway is a little less than 1500 sqft. Yours is 5-6x as large, and only three times the price. Yes, sounds like a reasonable bid. But I would still get 2-3 more bids to be sure.

Having done the work before and now having it done by a pro (toothless, but experienced nevertheless), I would have it done again.

I save my time and strength for carpentry and wrenching...not sniffing asphalt.

Convincing the wife is easy......show her how much the sealer will cost from Home Depot, include the applicator. Then tell her the time estimate (5-8 hours easy). Show her what happens to an unsealed driveway over time....$$$$$$. Same principle as painting a house.

Thanks that indeed does help.

Also I don't have a power edger nor anyway to apply it the stuff in a HOT format which I would imagine improves the quality of the application. I would also think that when done professionaly it lasts longer.

You guys just talked me into having someone else do it for me!

It is a whole lot more attractive than schlepping the stuff on yourself for 6 hours.:D

I'll seal your ass fault pretty boy!
