New to forum, new to San Antonio, new to LC ownership. Anyone have an idea as to approximate cost in this market for knuckles reseal? Although I have appreciated the oil's anti-rust properties on the underside of this former Wisconsin vehicle, the weeping has developed into bawling after the drive down from upper Midwest. Any recommendations for good service in SA? Any help much appreciated. Would have loved to make Jan 14 meeting but arrived two days too late. Looking forward to Feb. meeting of ACLC.

First let me say "Welcome" and please come to the next meeting. You didn't mention in the post if you are wanting to do the job yourself or take it to a shop. I am not familiar with the 80 series but there are a few on this site who are. Hit up Ben (bear80) and Brett (BrettinSA) IIRC, for shop info and other tech info.

Thanks very much. Little mechanical aptitude, so, stealership or independent shop, it is. From previous posting suggestions, I took it to Cornerstone Auto (which is close by) on Blanco this morning and they said they didn't feel comfortable tackling the job and recommended Dealer Alternative or Charlie Thrash Differential on West Ave. I dropped it off this morning at DA so we'll see what happens. I'll post the cost when I hear from them and the results of the work. Both shops super courteous. One thing Cornerstone recommended when having the work done was changing the diff lube to the thicker stuff Rover uses as a measure to protect the seals. Any thoughts from the Rover or LCers out there?

The front axle job is rather straight forward and can be done in a weekend if determined. Theres plenty of info in the 80 tech section and people will help when needed. Another idea is host a wrenching day, buy beer/food and have us help....its been awhile since we've had on anyways.

BTW, welcome :flipoff2:

I would think going back with the Toyota recomended gear oil would be best. Im curious to see what they charge. Are the using Toyota parts or aftermarket? I assume while in there they are doing axle seals?

Welcome to SA. Too bad you didnt want to do it yourself. Ive had mine apart so many times in the past year I could have it done in a day easy.

Thanks for the heads up. Thrash quoted $6-700 over the phone sight unseen but I would have to buy the parts/kit for the rebuild. I decided to let Dealer Alternative crank it out and address all the deferred maintenance from the previous owner. Ouch... Will get it back on Friday and will post pictures and results. From Mike at DA: "Leakiest. Knuckle. Ever." My own personal Exxon Valdez.

IIRC, there was some discussion at the last meeting about putting the springs on Kelly's 40 one weekend in the near future. If someone wants to volunteer to help a new member with a reseal job then let him know. I agree we need a wrench day soon.

Welcome and I hope to see you at a meeting in the future. Regarding repairs, stay away from Charile Trash......oh I mean Thrash.

Who/Where is this? Never heard of them.

Thrash drive shaft IIRC. Used to be a pretty good outfit back in the day but I think they kinda went south lately.

x2 on driveshafts unlimited of w.w. white rd

Had them make me a shortened taco dc front, good prices too. Then i messed up and forgot to watch the marks to line up the slip yoke and brake cleaned them off. Took it back and they re-balanced, re-sprayed and greased it free.

If you ever go its probably going to be hella far for you so have lunch at a place down the road called Chatman's Chicken, best fried chicken EVAR!

nah, if your on or near ww white and I 10 then you have to eat at the restaurant that is about a block away on the 410 side. I forget the name of it now but they have the best jalapeno fried chicken. awesome...
