Let's get at least a little action in here. I moved to WI in November and come May I am going to have to suck it up and take off the old blue and white plates for some white, red and black ones. ;p Anyway, I currently have a "parts" cruiser that I bought in MN but never got it titled. Does anyone know what I will need to do to get it titled now in MN. I have a bill of sale and also had the previous owner fill out the MN transfer of title sections as I thought I would be able to get this done before I moved. :whoops: Thank you for all the help.

techinically, for the paperwork to be correct, the numbers on the right frame horn and on all the rivited tags must match the numbers on the paperwork....

technically. my title doesn't match my rig either, frame swap and much more....

Is the MN title current, or a few years out of date? If it's clean, it should be no big deal... Either way, title it as a hobbyist truck, and don't drive it in January...$150ish now, but never pay again, and title it as a "street rod" designation.

Thanks Woody. The PO lost the title so I have no title to transfer that is why I got the bill of sale and had him fill out the parts he needed to on the re-title form. What do you mean by never pay it again? For plates? I have only paid a title fee to have it transfered to my name and never had to pay a title fee again. Have to pay for plates and regristration every year is that what you mean? Thanks

search on Hobbyist plates in the Wisc DMV pages....one time license plate, no stickers, available for 20years plus rigs....my 74 is a Hobbyist rig and the only restrictino is no driving in Jan (big fn deal...lol)

I will definately look into that. i agree big whoop. I would not drive it in Jan. anyway. sh*&t if I ever get the one I want looking like I want it to it will basically be a sunday cruiser anyway. Frame up "restoration" whatever that means. Cherry. The onther one which I have to find a way to get titled will be the one I drive around and beat on. "That looks like a logging trail oh I wonder where it goes" "A clearing for the telephone poles oh lets just see what is over the hill"......you get the idea. Thanks for the help.

if you are doing cherry stock, then look into collector plates....
if you are doing street rod offroad hacked to hell (like mine) then do hobbyist

cost is the same, "intent" is not.

Either way, you must have one primary daily driver plate on one of your vehicles, they won't issue either hobby or collector without it.

We run the hobby on my Cruiser and a collector on a 77 MGB. I might Collector the Lemon (motorhome) this year too, it's 20 years old now.....

watch out for collectoring the lemon, I believe your not suppose to pull a trailer over #500 with collector or hobbiest plates

hhhhmmm...good point there.....

didn't MW or stevie have his collectored or sumthin? either way, I'll check....gotta buy a rig for the ih8mud plate first tho....

MW did but he's lucky and never left the state with it. with all of your outta state travel I'd be leary.

thanks for the trailer tip...so much for that idea....probably for the best anyways....lol

and I think it ws 750#...no way I can skinni the FJ down to that level....

damn, 12 days to TX....LOTS and LOTS to do....

response from DMV. Guess I should probably run over to MN DMV tomorrow and see if I can get it titled here. Than will need to switch it over to WI.

Your cannot register/title a vehicle in Wisconsin with bills of sales. The
person you purchased it from will need to get a Minnesota title for it to
sign over to you.

Thank you for using the Wisconsin Department of Transportation's web site.

woah...way too much work...

For the 1996 80-series I just brought home from TX, I just mailed in the signed TX title, a copy of the "bill of sale" and my $$ for the taxes....

course, I haven't received the tags in the mail yet....hhhmmm

signed TX title,

This is what is key. You have a signed title. I have nothing and without a title no cigar in WI. I am going to become official in WI on Wednesday. Drive the hour to Eau Claire and get my vehicles registered, titled transferred, and WI license, have not decided yet if I want to get my motorcycle permit or not. I still have my MN drivers license so could possibly go into MN DMV and have apply for the title using the bill of sale and application. Than hopefully they would forward it to my "new" address and than have it transfered to WI. Yeah it is too much work especially considering I paid 200 for the cruiser and gonna probably cost close to 70 just to get it titled. Thing does not even move on it's own power yet either. When I first got it got it to run for about a minute while I constantly sprayed carb cleaner into the rochester carb. Since than have replaced the dizzy and points and hunting down a spring throttle plate for my factory carb. Next project will be to hook up the clutch and breaks and see if she moves on her own power. What fun. :grinpimp:

Hmmm i was thinking hobbyist tags.....but no trailering over 500#'s.....why, don't they think our welds are up to the tast of keeping a trailer attached to the rig? Hmm I will have to check that out this weekend...ahh i mean today. DMV not open tomorrow.

Well, I went to the MN DMV yesterday and filled out the paperwork and got license and tabs for the "parts" cruiser. Should get my title in I believe 8-10 weeks or a letter stating what I need to do to title it. I went to WI DMV on Wednesday and I just do not understand WI very well. Was told have to wait for a letter to get a license (checkered driving past) but could get tabs and title. This makes no sense to me and do not fully understand why they can not do it all in the same building. Also do not understand having to wait 8-10 wks for actual plates (stupid temp plates). Fees would be awesome for new cars but suck for older cars (which I have) As all of you know plates are 55, where as MN charges you more for new vechiles and drops it down at year 8 and 9 and anything older than 10 years is 35. Cost me 98 for WI registration, title transfer and plates x 2 (71 FJ40, 92 Toyota Paseo). 68 for MN restration, new title and plates ( "parts" cruiser). Wondering what law is about having WI title, registration and plates with MN license  Is there any law? My thought is if I get the "parts cruiser" to move under it's own power would like to drive it but not pay the 98 to switch it over to WI. I know WI states they require plates after 2 days !!!! of residency in WI. Therefore if I have WI license and am driving around with MN plates could get ticket for not having WI plates in 2 days. Trying to figure out if I could get a ticket with WI plates and MN drivers license. LOOPHOLES, LOOPHOLES. Next year will have to switch "parts cruiser" over as tabs will expire but would like to wait at least a few months before I drop another hundred on a car. :flamingo:

since you are now a resident of WI I would just get a WI drivers license to avoid any possible problems. I never heard of anyone having a problem, the only thing I would think the officer might require you to do, would be to update your DL to a wis license.
