Post pics, I can appreciate pretty much any vintage car; I work at a vintage auto restoration shop, its a fun way to work on many different kinds of classics.

Before I bought my Cruiser I daily drove a 66 Mustang GT fastback, a factory four-speed, dealer equipped dual quad on a highrise manifold car.....all stock except for a period-correct Hurst shifter. Oh, and during a rebuild it was converted over to solid lifters and cam, to mimic the Hi-po specs.

I really miss that car.....It is somewhere in California now.

Before that, 65 C code convertible that I dropped with Shelby springs.

and in high school a 67 coupe.

I will see what I can do about the pics. I will try to borrow a digital camera and see if I can figure out how to post. I am a little new at this. Crusin why no stang now. It looks like you got some good taste in picking them. You must have been a hit with the ladies in High school rolling in a 67. any pics of these cars?

We have a 1965 Mustang 289 Convertible. It has been in the family for a long time. Awesome car. Unfortunately, due to family politics, it sits unmaintained in a garage in Mississippi. The car was totally restored in the early 1990s, and now sits totally unmaintained and is starting to rust and die. It is truly a shame.

I recently had a 71 Mach 1 with an M code 351 and a 4 speed. My family has always been into mustangs. Currently we have a 67 A code, a 66GT coupe, and a 65 A code 4 speed.

I am curious about the M code you speak of. I purchased a 351C I am rebuilding for my 69 and don't know much about them. Do you know what the codes are all about and how to decipher what they are?

Thanks....There used to be a strong passion of mine, but it is weird, I'm a devoted Toy guy unless we're talking vintage muscle.

I have some pics, just not on my work computer.

I sold them due to a combination of a business opportunity combined with starting a family. I can barely wrench, so I bought mine completely done, and it will be awhile until I can justify and properly store a toy. And the money is getting crazy, after having that dual-4bbl 4-speed car, I am spoiled a bit and probably would only enjoy a convertible of most any early vintage (I like them all) or a GT coupe or fastback.

plus, it looks like my next car will be a 55 Chevy, no rust, just figuring out how/when to ship up from Texas. It's been in my family for a long time and while in pretty good shape, I'd probably need the time, $$, and space to tear it down.

waiting for a pic!!!

Just subscribe to Mustang Monthly for one year and you'll have all the codes down...or buy a few of those coffee table books for cheap.

I used to be able to quote most things 65- or 6, and some from other years. I'm sure there is a forum out there, but I never belonged to one.

If you get in a bind and need some code info, PM me and I'll see if I can look it up.

Cruisin is right. Mustang monthly is a great magazine. I just got this months yesterday and it is fully of great information. The coding is to decipher if it was originally a 2v or 4v and in some cases it will show if it had dual exhaust from the factory.

.

That car is big bucks now. My buddy paid 10,000$ for a rusty 66 fast back the only thing he kept was the roof and title. he grafted the roof to a coup it looks sweet.

I will look for your old car CC.

What the hell is an "LX" trim level in '69? I don't think it existed. The "GT" platform could be had in the 65?-68 models, but I think they stopped using that for '69. The "LX" name didn't exist until the trashbucket Fox body came along, just after the trashierbucket 74-78 glory years. I'm not a Ford person whatsoever, but I would gladly take a 66 Hertz car- those are sweeet.

Only mildly off topic, but since you are talking ponies I have a question for those of the more informed status.
I know nothing of fords, so yesterday I set out to identify a very strong running 302 that has been covered in a tarp for the last two years. The block is an older 75ZY mexican block. How can I identify the heads without removing them to find the casting numbers. On the rear of the passenger head, near the last exhaust port is stamped 2A. Does this shine any light onto what head it is?

Thanks, I won't be subscribing to any ford magazines anytime soon, but am going to use this motor soon.

Check out the web. I found a few places that can decode heads and blocks. some wont de code but will tell you if they are something special. On my clevland heads there is also another number stamped on the head under the 2a number. Might be worth taking a closer look. If i can find those websites again I will post a link.

I searched for longer than it would have taken to remove a head to check the full casting number. (underside of head has the number). Normally a 2 or a 4 denotes a cleveland with a 2 or 4 bbl, but I thought they said 2 or 4V, not 2 or 4A. Since I couldn't find this searching, I was hoping someone was in the know.

I'll try to help, I just checked my copy of Mustang and Ford Small Block V8's, a great book on the 1962-69 Ford Small Blocks by Bob Mannel. It doesnt go past 69, but the info is most likely relevant for subsequent years. Looking at the last year covered (1969), it looks like the casting number for 302 heads was C9OE-E. This number was cast on the bottom of the heads in the early 1960's, and may appear on the top of the head in later years (book is not clear on this for all years).

For Ford part and engineering numbers, C=1960's and 9 is the year, so C9 is 1969. D=1970's, so D0 is 1970, D1 is 1971, E is 1980's, F is 1990's and so on. The book says that the 302 heads in 1969, for example, were marked '302' in the rocker arm area, and sometimes a letter, such as 'E' would be marked under that, which represented the last letter of the casting number. Under the E, there would be a date code, such as 8H2, which represents August 2, 1968. 8 being 1968, H being August (H is the 8th letter of the alphabet), and 2 is the day of the month. It is likely that this pattern carried on until the mid 1970's, so using these codes as a guide may help you. They made a gazillion 302's, and most heads interchange, so you may have something from 1960's or 1970's installed after the engine was rtebuilt.

For more info, check out this website. I found it helpful when I got a Ford 4 speed Toploader and wanted to see if the bellhousing and flywheel I got were compatible for installation into a 68 Mustang:

Good Luck! If you need more info, PM me and I will try to help you out.

Brian

PS - I saw you referenced a 351 Cleveland in your last post - the Clevelands share 351 CI displacement only with the 351 Windsor motor, of which the 260-289-302's are of the same family. The Cleveland motors are totally different , from a different motor series, and parts do not interchange between Cleveland and Windsorfamilies. Clear as mud?
