I found a pintle ball combo where the ball is a part of the casting. Interesting.... I figure it would eliminate a week point. I have heard both good and bad about the pintle and ball where the ball is removable. Any one ever use them, or have any pro vs con info?

Pintle Hooks & Hitches: Low Cost Trailer Supplies

I'm using the pintle with the separate ball. I've had no problems with it. It's been said that these can sheer the ball off, but no one ever seems to have first or even actual second hand experience with it. Might be a consideration with a very heavy trailer. For Jeep trailers, I really doubt it will ever be a problem.

The issue with the bolted on ball seems to be it tends to get smacked on ledges due to departure angle in many applications. I can see how this could cause the nut to loosen, most likely, and possibly cause a shear-off situation.

I, too, wonder how well the totally cast ball-and-pintle combo works. Seems like it would mostly solve the departure angle issues, in part because the rounded form-factor should cause most blows to be ineffective.

Maybe you need to grease it when using a ball hitch? Seems like that might help, so wonder what the operating instructions have to say about that?

I like having the option of a ball hitch, although the only trailer I own now has a lunette.
