So I am thinking about what type of 4x4 to get my soon to be 16 year old son. A 4runner (4 cylinder to maximize mpg) was at the top of the list, but I have a complicating factor.

My son is 6'4" now and I would not be surprised if he gets to be 6'8".

Are there any modifications for the 4runner to get him to fit somewhat comfortably or do I need to look for another high mpg vehicle that would work.

Not that I have ever heard of...(doesn't mean they don't exist) but the head space is definitely limited.

I'm 5' 11" and I would hate driving mine if I was any taller.

I'm about 6'1 and I think If I was any taller, long trips would be terrible. There is enough room to sit normally, but when you try to spread out laterally (like long trips on cruise control) the door, and center console are quite close.

That said, I normally don't drive with my seat all the way back. and prefer a more upright seating.

I built custom seat rail extenders, and I am pretty comfortable being a leggy 6'4". Bought some Tundra seats that I'm gonna put in with new rail extenders as well. The Tundra seats offer 2" of extra hamstring support, so I think this setup will be perfect. Especially an easy mod if you get manual seats. It requires a bit of welding for the electric seats. Oh, also... don't get the sunroof. There is molding in the roof that drops down about an extra 1" to 1.5". I clear that about 1/2", so if I was any taller, the sunroof wouldn't work at all.

I am 6' 9" and I drive a '97 4Runner. Getting in and situated can be a chore. As mentioned, steer clear of the sunroof. Mine has it and my head is constantly rubbing the trim. The only thing that makes it possible for me is that I like to drive relatively reclined. I have a 38" inseam. It's not a 'comfortable' car for a tall person but I guess it comes down to the fact that I'm willing to sacrifice some comfort for the quality of the vehicle. And if your son starts to get past 6' 6" he'll get used to adjusting his posture for the given situation and he'll hardly notice it after a while. In short, no. I don't know of any mods. Though I'm going to look into what simpletallman has suggested.

cut the roof off.. or buy a domestic vehicle

bucket seats... OR u could try a sun roof maybe ?

Thanks for all the input, especially simpletallman for posting the pic of his custom rail.

My takeaway is that we should be able to make it work, although the 4runner is not a natural fit for tall people.

Regarding domestic trucks my personal experience is that a lot of the newer trucks are short on room as well. Even if they do have headroom the first 10" of glass at the top of the windshield making it hard to sit upright. My girlfriend has a full-size 2004 Tahoe and my knees are firmly rooted against the dashboard. (My landcruiser fits me very well with the LandTank Rail Extensions).
