My dog Otis is an almost 10 year old english bulldog/pitbull mix. He's always been kind of a couch potato but he goes nuts when somebody comes to the door. Over the last 3-4 weeks on 3 different occasions he has seen someone pull into the driveway, get all excited barking and such, then about a minute after the person comes into the house he just collapses right where he is. Once in his crate, once on the stairs (thankfully I was right there or he would have fallen down them totally limp) and last night right on the floor in my entryway. He kind of just goes totally limp, breathes hard for a second, then about a minute later he gets up and slowly goes back to normal. In 3-5 minutes he's totally back to normal. I am planning on taking him to the vet next week for a checkup but I don't know if they'll be able to tell me anything unless he does it there. Anyone have any ideas?

Has he started coughing?

I'm going with congestive heart failure of some sort. I wouldn't be shocked if they can figure something out and put him on meds to perk him back up though.

Does he seem disoriented at all? I had an Aussie that would have mild seizures every so often, mainly after strenuous activity - like frisbee. It almost seemed like over-exertion. He would kind of stumble around a little then lay down, would only last 10-30 seconds.

We put him on a homemade food diet (no corn byproducts) and he never had another one.

But I would definitely get him to the vet!

I'm far from a vet, but that was my gut feeling as well, especially considering the OE Bulldog lineage.

Sounds like heart worms. When the worm block the passage of blood the dog becomes lethargic...

heart worms led into congestive heart failure...

He'd be coughing like a fiend if he had that level of heartworms.

No coughing at all, and he's always taken those heart worm pills since he was a puppy. It so strange because he can go out and run and chase after balls no problem for basically as long as I continue to throw them. I've actually for the last few years had to stop him because he's not as young as he used to be and will chase tennis balls until he's panting so bad I think he's going to keel over. Yet jumping off the couch from a dead sleep and barking for 30 seconds seems to be bringing this on.

Next time it happen, check his gums to see if they are good and red/pink or going white. If white it's a heart/circulation problem with low oxygen levels in the blood. My second thought would be seizure.

might be an inner ear problem, like vertigo, so when he 1st gets up and is all excited it will get dizzy and want to lay down and pant(as he is confused and in some pain)

I'll have to check his gums if he does it again before I can get him to the vet. He actually doesn't go down until after he's kind of calmed down from somebody showing up. Last night he was on the couch when the Schwans frozen food guy showed up. I got up and he started barking and of course beat me to the door. Otis continued to bark until the guy came in the door. He knows the guy so Otis stopped his barking, got petted on the head and turned around to go back to the couch, then all 4 legs went out from under him at once instantly and he was just laying there on the floor. I went over and he was breathing a little hard for a few breaths, then he stood up on his own about 2 minutes later and went back to the couch. It's obviously scaring the crap out of him because after it has happened each time he won't leave either me or my wife's side for about 10 minutes.

Yes, I hate grocery shopping and have a big freezer. Some of their stuff (ok more like most of it) is ridiculously overpriced but they have good frozen vegetables, ice cream, frozen pizza, and few other "meal in a bag" deals that are pretty good.

i am just giving you s*** b/c i am a food snob...

I hope your pooch is OK.

I just pictured myself doing the same thing your dog does...well sorta. Once I get warmed up I can run, bike, work out, whatever for a very long time...but if I hope up from a dead sleep and try to run I'll run straight into the wall if I don't fall over first. Intense physical activity straight from a dead sleep doesn't go over well for me. Next thing you know I'll be barking and drooling on myself...

Best of luck to your buddy.

had a friends lab that had diabetic seizures, but the poor dog would flop all over the place not lay still

My wife's dog didn't flop while seizing. I don't think it had diabetic seizures, though. It would kinda go into a trance for a little while, and then slowly come back to life.

x many on CHF. You might think about moving the DVM appt up to earliest available. Untreated, CHF can be terminal quite rapidly. One med (pimobendan) has studies showing survival increase from 13 days (placebo) to 130 days (treated).

Here's my thread about this kinda thing: https://forum.ih8mud.com/chit-chat-section/196356-doberman-pinchers-cardio.html Dilated Cardio Myopathy ~ canine for CHF.

Best of luck, let us know how it turns out.
