Well I sold the rust free 89 4Runner I picked up a few months ago. I had around $1800 total into the 89 and sold it for $4000, not bad. So I while I was searching craigs list for 4Runner parts for my little brother's 86 4Runner I found a 88 for cheap. It's a 88 4Runner with a 22RE and 5speed, has 229k miles but the engine has 130k. The original 22re had the timing chain break and bent a few valves, so he replaced it with a used engine that had 70k miles (said he had proof but needs to find it). The engine does have paint marker writing on it, like junk yard put on their parts. He was driving the 4Runner and "the fan fell off and the engine starting making scary nosies", so he parked it and it sit in his garage for 2 1/2 years. From looking the engine over I can tell the water pump is the only thing wrong, so I cut the fan belt off and put a battery in it just to see if it'd start. It cranked over a few seconds but the 22re fired right up and ran smooth with no "scary nosies". So I replaced the water pump but before I can do anything else I need a radaitor (the fan cut into it) and I have one back in Andrews so it'll have to wait till I got back home this weekend. The clutch slave cylinder is leaking so I'll have to replace it too.

The 4Runner has a Kayline soft top but someone tried to break into the 4Runner by cutting a hole in the drivers side window, the zippers for the rear window don't zip closed, and it's missing a few snaps. Since Kayline went out of business I'm going to looking into having one made. There's only two small dime size rust spots, it's under the paint making it bubble out. So I'm going to sand the spots down to stop it from spreading. The interior is in okay shape but is not half as bad as the 89's. There is a working Sony CD player, the seats are in good shape (drivers seat restuffed a year before he parked it). The tires are shot and the wheels need a lot of cleaning. I'm not crazy about the colors (burgundy with red interior) but it still looks good.

man steven,
where you keep finding these sweet deals?
looks like a good fixer upper.
you planning on selling this one too?

Bryan I find them on craigslist. More then likely I'll end up selling this one too, I think I found a new hobby. My actual likes that I'm making money off of a vehicle for a change, lol. I'll do this one the same as I did the 89, fix it up and start driving it till I get all the bugs/problems worked out and then sell it. I don't want to sell someone a vehicle that's going to leave them on the side of the road. That 89 was a great running 4Runner and even with the 3.0 I would drive it any where. This one seems to have a good running 22re but I have to get a radiator before I can tell for sure. So far it's only idled for a short timeand it idles very smooth.

Well this one wasn't as easy to get running as the 89. The guy I got it from must have let it run hot when the water pump went out, because it's got a blown head gasket. It's not blown to the point of getting water in the oil or exhaust, but I'm getting exhaust in the coolant and it was come close to over heating. It runs good and has a good power. So I'm looking at either replacing the whole head or just the gasket, along with timing chain. I did find a newly rebuilt 22re on c/l for $850 and I thought about going that route.

Before I found out it had a blown head gasket I bought a great condition used Kayline soft top and a set of 16" Tacoma 5 star wheel/tires.

Ordered a new head, headgasket, and timing chain kit from http://www.engnbldr.com/ can't wait to get this 4Runner going. Once I sell it I'll have more money to put towards getting the 4.3 swaped into my 91 SAS'd 4Runner.
