OK so I know that is a subjective question but I could not think of a better place to put it than in the local forums...:grinpimp:

So the search has started up again for "my" cruiser.. Starting to replenish the "Greg's Cruiser Fund" piggy bank since taxes are taken care of and we can breath again.

I am very specific in what I am looking for and don't mind traveling for the right one (Would prefer '85-'87 FJ60, yes 60 only, in Tan with semi-low miles, no MAJOR work, and little rust). However, it seems that when I am looking for decent cruisers to start out my life on they all are incredibly, ridiculously priced in our area?! Like the one in Carson that I posted a couple weeks ago, that thing is a HEEP with 250K+ on it, interior destroyed and really the only thing going for it is the straight body and what seems to be a decent running engine/drivetrain. To me the $2200 is overpriced by about $800. Then there is the guy up in Tahoe that I have been to see his '85, same color as the Carson one, 279k and everything seems to be ok but wont let me take it to a mechanic to have a once over and wont let me do a compression test and he has been trying to sell it for going on 3yrs now for $2400. His is in good condition inside and out but the engine things and that fact that he won't let me take it to a mechanic weird me out, which makes me believe it is close to $1k overpriced.

Am I just stupidly crazy on what I think a 25+yr old car should be worth or is it just our area? Don't get me wrong I am realistic but my realism also lets me know that I am going to be doing the majority of the work myself (I work in town so if it sits for a week or two while I work on it I can bike commute).

So am I completely off base here? Budget will grow as time does but I am thinking of keeping within $3-$4K.

FWIW, I paid 2500 w/ a LOT of rust, bad alternator, blown cat and 213K on the clock!
The GREAT deals are out there, though. RustyTLC should be in JAIL for what he picked his up for!

Ok so are you saying that I am off base v. the sellers? Or is it more a mix of me and the sellers?

How's the job hunt going?

I think youre doing the right thing, networking. Car deals are like good jobs the best ones never hit the street. That's how I found my 60 one of those friend of a friend things.

Nope, I think you are right about the sellers being a little off their rocker. I can't believe the prices people ask for a 60 series LC. I'm not even sure I get the 40 series prices. I mean it is awesome when someone does a total restoration and it is showroom clean and I get it costs a lot of money to restore anything, but to turn around a ask $40-50k for a leaf sprung, simple 40 is just craaaazy to me. Probably even more crazy is the people that are willing to pay it.

Keep up the hunt and good luck, hopefully you will find the right one soon.

Jack

Thanks guys for reassuring me. Yeah it seems that when the good ones pop up I don't have the cash or they are gone quick. I have seen ONE tan one pop up locally and it was gone In a week.

Guess I will just keep my eye out.

What exatly are you lookin for in a 60 series cruiser i have a brown one body is clean one dent and the interior is good im getting ready to do a 3fe swap in this rig but i might be interested in selling as well as i have alot of projects in the works let me know what you want and i might be able to help out or at least keep an eye out

NEEDS:
- Reliable (semi-low mileage, less than 250k would be nice but I am realistic)
- good functioning drivetrain (dont mind if knuckle rebuild is needed and 4x4 must function well)
- good functioning engine
- decent/good interior (dont mind stains and some rips but want headliner in good condition and dash not cracked)
- somewhere in the $3k range (cheaper would be better and I understand what that gets me)
- FJ60 (no 62, dont want to deal with the electrical gremlins of the power everything and I REALLY want a stick again, miss my old truck because of that)

WANTS:
- tan (464)
- diesel
- 5spd
- No rust at all (LOL do those exist?!)

Basically, this will be my DD, camping rig, dog hauler, and "other" car to make the Highlander our nice car. I work 3 miles from my house so I ride to work everyday just about and will continue to until I find work that it takes longer for me to get to work than an 30-45 minutes riding. What I don't want is a repeat of our last used car purchase which resulted in us buying the car for $2800, then 6 months later having to replace the transmission because the owner told us she had just had it serviced and everything was fine. That cost us $3500 from a good shop and we got a good, rebuilt tranny.

While I love the 464 Tan and that is ultimately what I want, it seems they are rather hard to find and I am realistic and will take whatever color the right cruiser is (as a co-worker says "Color can be changed"). I really like Tan, Silver, White, blues, and brown (in that order) but again will take what is at the right price.

I sent you a pm if you would give me a call and we can talk 775-530-4292 names Dan

You aren't crazy, these people are.

2003 F250 POWERSTROKE

I'd like to know how a truck that's going on 10 years old, even if it has the best engine available, is worth 5K less than I can buy a new Dodge for..

So good to see that I am not the only one that finds stuff like this absurd. I mean we paid $26k for our 08 Highlander base in 09 with 40k on it. How people are expecting 10+ yr old "normal" cars to fetch only slightly less than they paid is ridiculous. I can under stand wanting to recoup some cost when you just recently did work but SOME not all. And always love the "$6000 in upgrades and receipts to prove it!". That really doesn't mean isht unless you are still within a warranty period. At least to me.
