Purchased a 1998 LC over the summer with an Alpine ILX-107 wireless carplay. This install looks clean, has a great backup camera, and works really well.........except for the navigation.

It’s a well documented problem with this head unit if you get bEyond the initial google results..of course I learned that after buying the car lol. The problem got marginally better with the iOS 13 iPhone update but still very glitchy.

I’m considering a new head unit but not sure what’s involved. Are the hookups proprietary or interchangeable between brands? What about the backup camera?

Any suggestions on replacements?

Have one in a 2000 4Runner and absolutely hate this head unit. The volume buttons are a terrible design.

AFAIK, they've never released any firmware updates for this head unit.

You should be able to replace it with any double-DIN head unit. Assuming the ILX-107 was installed correctly (i.e. with a harness instead of spliced connections), you can even reuse the harness from it. Should be a very easy installation just to swap one head unit for another.

Great, it looks like they used a harness

It's a very limited head unit. A friend bought one and quickly returned it for an ilx207. Wireless carplay wasn't that great.

Two things,
Have you tried using it wired? And are there any firmware updates for your radio?

No firmware updates available for this unit :(

@NearJetties are you happy with your alpine? Would you recommend it?

Sorry for being off topic.

I'm looking for a new stereo and I'm leaning towards alpine.

The thing is I've read good and bad. Most review sites cover the good and downgrade the bad. I've read some buyer feedbacks as well and that put me on the fence. Do they ship real melons?

After searching the net I've found a better review. A bit harsh finally one that seems to tell it how it is. What do you think about this Alpine HU? How bad are the drawbacks?

How hard is life with just one USB? What about the screen resolution is it a pixel war?

Tips?

Hi David,

the ILX-107 is great...when it’s working. I haven’t been able to resolve the navigation issue with CarPlay. It works great about 75% of the time— when it doesn’t it extremely infuriating. The head unit is misinterpreting the gps signal.

the fact that the headunit can’t do a firmware update is ridiculous. I love the look and interface but this problem ruins the usefulness.

that is the only problem I’ve had with it and it hasn’t been a consistent experience for all users but it happens with iPhone XS Max and my wife’s 8 plus.

can’t comment on the newer models since I’m not familiar and a car audio newb.

where I actually was:

Where the headunit thought I was:

I’ll be replacing it with a pioneer or me wood if you want to buy it :)
