Anyone here ever been? Anything that is a "must see"?

Couple of pretty detailed write ups on trips to Alaska on ExpeditionPortal.com. Also if you would like I can call my friend who lives there and see what he thinks are must sees and must be dones. Probably a year or two away from that trip.

Holy s***. What a place.

Denali is a must. Give yourself some time there, a couple days anyhow. It's one of the most convincing arguments for government.

I've been a lot of places, and I don't like most of them.

I'm planning on going back to AK summer of 2011.

Nate smells bad.

Was born there and lived all over it.

If you're going in summer.....bear jams. You'll be amazed at how many cars stop on the side of the highway to look at a couple brown specks on a mountain a mile away. It's like a tourist train wreck.

Seriously, the best things to see without an unlimited bank roll are Denali, salmon fishing, Matanuska glacier, and driving the highways. Seward marine life aquarium is pretty cool and hit the zoo in Anchorage at the end of your trip to see all the wildlife you missed on the highways.

Good luck.

That glacier is awesome. Salmon fishing is my priority next time. I'd skip halibut fishing, they don't fight and kinda taste like every other whitefish.

There was some beach on the west side of the Kenai peninsula that had a bunch of bald eagles just hanging out, eating fish they had caught. It was incredible.

We'll be there the last 2 weeks of July.
Have a friend at Elmendorf air base in Anchorage that we'll
be staying with.
We are planning on about 5 days there and the Seward area then
hitting the road north toward Denali.
Big place! I'm sure we'll have to make a few more trips to feel like we
have experienced the place.

Good for you Lane....that sounds like it will be a terrific trip!

I lived there for eight years. I like spending time in S/E Alaska taking the ferry from town to town. If you are going to Anchorage, I would just try to pick a few places to visit. Then slow down and enjoy your experience. Dont try to rush around and see everything. If you do you will totally miss the Alaska experience, and just end up seeing a bunch of places. If it were me I would try to spend a week floating down a long slow moving river. Good luck Al

A long slow float sounds like a great idea. We do need to sit down and figure out what the priorities should be. I HAVE to get to Wasilla and visit with Mark Whatley. I think Denali should be seen, other than that we
are pretty open. We have checked the ferries and think that would be fun. Plan on mailing our backpacking stuff up so we can lug that around. should be a great trip. Our friend will be there for 4 years so we can plan on getting back up there again before she moves.

You could get your friend to locate a raft and small kicker for you. Then Just hire a float plane to drop you off somewhere. Also look into Forest Service cabins on remote lakes. Fly in hang out and fish while camping in style. You need to reserve these cabins ASAP, because you are going during prime season.

I do not think you really have enough time to do too much ferry travel.

A week from today we'll be on a boat cruising around Kenai Fjord!
Alaska railroad from Anchorage to Seward and back.

If you've got a day, I highly recommend the Harding Icefield Trail.

Nice day hike and amazing views of Exit Glacier and the Icefield. Largest Brown I've ever seen was off that trail although I think it's early for berries. Bring a camera.

Even when the weather in Seward is cloudy (most of the time), for some reason the glaciers and icefields will still have blue sky above them in summer. Some kinda weather/glacier thing.

If you're going to Alaska, you need to know about bear safety. There are black bears and there are brown/grizzly bears. Black bears are the ones you need to worry about. For the most part, if you're out in the woods I would recommend wearing something, like bells, that makes noise to scare away the bears. The good news is that when you're out hiking you can tell which bears are around by their scat. The brown bears eat mostly fruit and berries and if you see scat that looks like fruit and berries in it, you are reasonably safe. You can tell that black bears are nearby also through their scat, which contains bells.:grinpimp:

Have fun lane!!!

Will be in Anchorage in 12 hours!

We made it after avery long day. Arrived in Anchorage around midnight our time.
57 degrees and raining, but it felt good after the heat we've been having! At a friends house now at the
Airforce base. Looking at the Chugach mountains out the front window, even smells like the wilderness!
Lazy day planned for today, grocery shopping and looking around Anchorage. Tomorrow Alaska railroad to Seward and a boat tour of the Kenai Nat. park.
No Cruisers spotted yet. Going to visit Mark Whatley on Thursday if things work out.

Lane, try some Alaskan Amber on draft

Had one yesterday, have a six of their Porter and really don't like it.
Picked up a Growler today at a local pub and its great!
Had a down day and looked around town, actually had some sun.
Tomorrow we go to the Portage glacier and take a boat out to that. Late
afternoon I head north, camp the night and meet the fishing guide in the morning.
Still have to call Whatley and plan a visit.
Having a good time, everyone should make a trip up here!
