Alaska BLM to Amend Kobuk Seward Peninsula Land Use Plan

Dear BRC Members and supporters in Alaska,

We wanted to pass along a land use bulletin sent this morning by the folks over at the United Four Wheel Drive Associations (UFWDA). The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) has just announced they will amend their Kobuk-Seward Peninsula Resource Management Plan (KSP/RMP) to address recreation decisions and travel management decisions for the Squirrel River Special Recreation Management Area (SRMA).

There is more information in the bulletin, which is pasted below and available on UFWDA's webpage.

Keep up to date on this and other OHV issues by subscribing to UFWDA's Land Use Bulletin email list.

As always, call or email if you have any questions or comments.

Thanks in advance for your involvement,

BLM to Amend Kobuk Seward Peninsula Land Use Plan to Address Squirrel River Special Recreation Management Area

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) will amend its Kobuk-Seward Peninsula Resource Management Plan (KSP/RMP) to address recreation decisions and travel management decisions for the Squirrel River Special Recreation Management Area (SRMA). The Squirrel River SRMA consists of 644,000 acres of public lands in northwest Alaska.

Key issues included in the plan are recreation, subsistence, commercial guiding and travel management.

The BLM invites public participation during the development of the KSP/RMP amendment and planning for the Squirrel River area. The public scoping period began May 13, 2010, when the Notice of Intent was published in the Federal Register, and will end December 3, 2010..

Public scoping meetings will be held in Fairbanks and Anchorage with meeting dates, times and locations as follows:

November 15, 2010, 7:00 p.m., Campbell Creek Science Center, Anchorage, Alaska
November 18, 2010, 7:00 p.m., BLM Fairbanks District Office, Fairbanks, Alaska
An open house will be held 30 minutes prior to each scheduled meeting time.

Written comments may be submitted at the public scoping meetings or sent to BLM Central Yukon Field Office, Attn: KSP/RMP Amendment, 1150 University Avenue, Fairbanks, AK 99709-3844. Comments may also be submitted via e-mail to AK_CYFO_GeneralDelivery@blm.gov or by fax at (907) 474-2282.

Comments must be received before the end of the scoping period to be fully considered. For information about the amendment to the KSP/RMP for the Squirrel River planning area, contact the BLM at (907) 271-3202, or visit our web page http://www.blm.gov/ak/st/en/prog/planning.html
