What is a safe estimate to use (PSI) when airing down tires for low traction situations on the FJ cruiser to prevent loosing the bead on the wheel?

http://www.4x4now.com/sfjun96.htm is a good starter on tire pressures....

for starters, I'd suggest 15 or so psi, and see how things work. "generally" a radial tire will work well in the 10-15 range, while a bias tire prefers something in the 6-12 range. (assuming a C-range tire...I won't go that low with my heavy 80-series and the D-range tires on there..more like 20)

Run a little lower in sand and in light snow..and while I rarely air up before hitting the highway, DO be sure to stop at the first station and get air....a little road time won't hurt the tires much at low pressure, but it's still not the best for them and the handling change on the road can be tricky too.

We have run as low as 10 on my Land Rover but I always feel safer around 15 personally.
