Hi guys, does any one know of a good air compressor that i can install in a vehicle? Something better than the Firestone one.

Thanks Mel

KMS has one on sale.

PacBrake 12V Compressor
• 100% Duty cycle @ 100PSI
• 3/4 HP 38.5 amps@13.8V
• 3.4 CFM @ 0 PSI 0.77 CFM @ 90 PSI
Reg. $289.95
1PAC-HP10625V
$269.95

Go to http://www.kmstools.com/ and click on the FLYER link, then scroll down to page 30 CAR PARTS, and you can see the 12v compressor they have for sale.

Or I can just link it apparently as well.

Around $550.00USD, for another 800.00 you can have a winch attached to it. The compressor on the PowerPlant is next model down.

Talked to KMS and there are several things about the Pac Brake and some of the other ones they have that have to be considered.
First of - purpose - I told him that on average I would use mine to fill up 4 33" or 35" tires, now do that every weekend or even every other weekend and it puts some strain on the air compressor. Regardless of which one you choose a tank is by far the best option and for a 35" tire a 3-5 gallon tank is ideal. Out of all of the compressors the Pac Brake is by far the best they offer and the most heavy duty and will outlive the other ones for such a use. The only thing that they don't tell you is that you need a special pressure release for the compressor head (otherwise the pressure stays in the head and when it starts up again the piston has 150+psi to fight with). This feature is another $100+ including a pressure switch and some other hoses and crap. To get that compressor, with the kit, and a 5 gallon tank from them you are looking at around $525 - $550. The good side of that is that it will live for a long time and you can pump up as many tires as you want, quickly. Anything else (from what they have) is almost a waste of money as it will be extremly slow, generate a lot of heat (which will kill it) and be under powered and likely die after a year of continuos use. Even with ARB or WARN compressors I would still throw a tank in there and a pressure switch.
A better way might be going straight to a York compressor, driven off one of the belts for your engine and a tank, that way you are looking at a CFM of 5-8+ (depending on the model) and you can even run air tools.

You mean like this, I like this better, twin piston, has an oil filled crankcase. Runs at 110psi, fill tires, belly boats, air mattresses all day.

I've got a York with a dual pulley electric clutch that came off an '85 Mack Superliner. The tag says "MACK" which is way better than freightliner, you might as well have "Jeep" on it, Jeff. Have three air resivoirs off a '75 Mack "R" model as well. I was thinking they'd fit nicely where the spare tire used to reside. Need to set these up so I can use the airhorn that came off the '75. Might be good for air lockers and tools/tires as well....

Weight

I weighed my 74 the other day. It was virtually unloaded, without the fuel carrier. It weighed 5,250 lbs. !!!. My gross vehicle weight is now my unlaiden tare weight. How much would that York compressor weigh?

Canadian tire has a compressor with a 2g tank 120v on sale for half price at $49 it only 1.6 to 2 amp motor and it work on a 400 watt power inverter with no problems. i just gave it a try and it fills the tank up under 2 min.

A york weighs 10-20 lbs thereabouts.

wouldn't touch it myself, it's basically the same unit that I picked up from KMS for about $120 (Chinese knock-off) and it works great on filling up balloons and generating heat, useless for 33"+ tires. The specs are the same. I'd rather add $200 and get the Pac Brake and not need one after that.

I bought a cheapo compressor kit at walmart that resembles that viair. Didn't expect it to last and was only temporary solution but I've been using it about a year now. I'm usually only airing up from about 20psi to 30psi on 33x10.50. It heats up quite hot by the time I have all four done. Don't think I'd be happy with it for large tires.
