Greetings, fellow GX enthusiasts. I recently had the bad fortune of discovering a seized AC compressor on my 2009 GX. The pulley works fine when the clutch is not engaged, but with it engaged, the compressor will not move and the serpentine belt releases the howl of a screaming banshee (how I discovered the issue).
So, I am looking at replacing the compressor with a new Denso unit. My question is, what other parts require replacement as well? I am looking at this kit from Napa which includes a compressor, front expansion valve, and a receiver dryer.

I've read that a seized compressor can introduce metal into the system and was wondering if I needed to replace any of the rear ac components as well. While we do not currently use the rear ac, I would hate to have a problem down the road because I didn't address something while the system was already apart. I am considering buying a rear expansion valve as well, but thought I would get some advice from those who may know better than myself. With that in mind, any input would be much appreciated!

I would also replace the condenser and flush the entire system (you can buy aerosol cans of AC flush). During the flush you can see how much (if any) gunk/metal debris comes out of the lines and then decide if you also need to replace any evaporator cores. Definitely replace the drier/reciever too, along with all O-rings on the various connections in the high and low pressure lines. Then vacuum test for leaks and recharge with R134A and new PAG oil.

I redid the AC on my old Subaru and didn't bother replacing any of the expansion valves, although some folks recommend replacing. The compressor was trashed but no gunk came out of the evaporator when I flushed it. It's still running fine over a year later and the expansion valves are now 22 years old. If it's cheap enough to replace the valves and you plan to keep the GX for a long time; I'd go ahead and replace all of them. Rear AC is nice to use if you haul people/kids around.

You are on the right track. To prevent future compressor failure due to debris and metal contamination you should replace the Compressor, condenser (reciever dryer is affixed to it so it will have a new desicant bag as well), front and rear expansion valves. Like mentioned, it needs to be flushed really good and line cleaned out. It is a s***ty thing to happen and why at most shops this service is very costly.
