I am seriously considering a JDM 1980 BJ41. I have seen alot of pics of it and it is really clean with very little rust. I am not really concerned about the body. The thing I am concerned about is the 2b engine and stock grear ratio. Is the JDM 2b a 24v system? Also I have heard form TLC that the top speed on one is around 45mph with the stock gear ratio, if so I can't really drive it back to Oregon. Also.. 10K seems a little steep for a rig with 90k on it. Is it going to be cheaper for me to go late 70's FJ40 and put a diesel in it? As a new FJ enthusist...Input is great thanks guys...

Hi nhall

It could be either 24V or 12V.

A lot of people seem to refer to cruisers that "were made for delivery to anywhere in the world other than the USA" as "JDM".

Those that were made for delivery to Australia and NZ were in fact 12V.

However I understand a "genuine JDM" (one built for the Japanese Domestic Market) would indeed be 24V.

I've got a B engine (2977cc) which is slightly lower capacity again than the 2B --- yet I can cruise reasonably comfortably at 100km/hr (until I meet a hill). That's just over 60 mph I think?

My slow speed on the hills can be "an obstruction to other traffic" when I tow my trailer but I don't think I represent any problem without one!

90,000 miles is low mileage for such a vehicle here. Whether the price is fair depends on the condition - as always. (From what you say - the condition appears well above average - but I still can't really comment on the price because I'm sure you don't live where I live. And prices even within a big country like the USA must surely vary from one part of it to another.)

I might be wrong, but I'd heard that the BJ41/2B setup was, in fact, a JDM-specific combo... meaning there's a good chance its 24V.

Apart from that, marbles is right: I was expecting my NZ cruiser to be 24V and even told the tow guy not to try and jump it. Boy was I embarassed (and happy) that it was 12V.

As for the top speed, the B/2B/3B are all pretty similar in terms of performance, we're talking 10% differences. Again like marbles, my 3B goes 100km/h (62mph) quite happily; in fact it can definitely go faster, but I lose my nerve.

Hard to find parts?

Yes it can be hard to find parts? but alot of the parts from the BJ60 work and there are lots of other sources. If the trucks clean buy it and enjoy the help and access to parts from this great forum.

SOR has at least as many parts for the 2B as the 3B (there are few that are 2B specific), which will be the only substantial difference between a 40/41/42. Some say that SOR is expensive but I like the convenience of knowing where to get what I need.

I have never had a problem finding parts for my non-US cruiser.

Just PMed ya. forgot to tell you, with 31" tires, my motor was screaming at 100km. I went with the 33"s robbed a little power, but increased my top speed. I drive it 100 miles a day 2 to 4 days a week. When I bought it I drove from Canada to centeral California, it was slow but not 45 mph slow.

What kind of mileage are you getting with the 33s?

Thx,
Bob

I would have to guess around 18-19 mpg. I am running Bio Diesel and I don't have a meter on my hand pump, just going by how far I can go on a tank.
