My 97 XD 4.0 is over heating. I've changed thermo, water pump, back flushed. Radiator is next. Take rad to shop or get new one? Is it rad? Engine? Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Well, besides overheating is the engine running good? Are you losing any water in your rad ?? Is your engine oil free of water?? Your radiator should be next. Have it flushed to make sure its free flowing if its good then you don’t need a new one. Then check your fan clutch and belts. If all the above is done next would be Cylinder head issues.

Hope you resolve it

Thanks for the response. Not losing any water and there is not water in the oil. Belts good, not sure about the fan clutch. I'm not sure how that operates but I'll research it. How about the two electrical fans in front of radiator? I'll do another flush but believe that was fine the first time. Thanks again.

What weight oil are you using? This may sound crazy, but when I went to a heavier weight in my Defender (3.9L engine) my engine temp dropped about 20 degrees. Changing my belts, water pump, flushing the radiator, and replacing the thermostat did nothing.

Another problem could be a bad temp sensor. I know Defenders have the problem, so its probably the same part.

Hopefully you have already figured it out since the post is a few months old...

X2 on the temp sensor.

If you know someone with a Scan Gauge II, hook it up to your OBD2 port and bring up the water temp.

The stock temp gauge is crap. Mine reads hotter when the lights are on.

You want to check the radiator fans, if they are not working, your Land Rover will get hot. Just fix one of those after overheating and busting the antifreeze tank too.
