Not much of a 4-runner mechanic, but my daughters both drive 'em. The '97 won't start, seems to have no spark. Any ideas on where I should begin to look???

EFI fuse/relay

Picked up an OBD scanner and afetr I plugged it in, she started right up. I didn't clear any codes, just plugged in the analyzer and she fired up. However, I am now getting random misfire codes on 3 cylinders.

How many miles?

Timing belt/water pump ever changed?

Check engine light on?

Well?
:D

It's got a 155K + miles. Changed the timing belt and water piump about 3 months ago. Check engine light was on, then went off after plugging in the scanner, and is back on again.

Changed the plugs and wires during the time it wouldn't start.

No, the last check I had 6 events:

P0302
P0300
P0301
P0302
P0303
P0305

After I erase the codes, it runs good. But after driving it a while, she starts to run rough and the exhaust stinks.

Here is the DTC chart and likely causes....http://www.fileden.com/files/2009/12/13/2686878/Diagnostic Trouble Code Chart.pdf

Entire FSM here.....1996 to 2002 Toyota 4Runner OEM Repair and Wiring Manuals

Quick things to check for

main power and ground connections
pcv valve operation
vacuum leak
compression test
connectors at sensors

Do you have a multimeter?
Test per FSM the coolant temp sensor and mass air flow sensors.

Working on a boat all day tomorrow. Will research the info in your post. Sounds like a good place to start.

Read some old posts on another forum with similar problem. They all pointed towards electrical ground, defective coil or injector, bad sensor or improperly calibrated throttle position sensor. I hate to just start changing parts. Will keep you posted on what develops.

I'm leaning toward ground or sensor....

Don't think you will find 2 out of 3 coils went bad or 4 out of 6 injectors....etc.

Really thinking you will find something wrong with the CTS or MAF.

Ground wire bundle on drivers side of intake tight?
Temp sensor on back of engine connected/tight?
What kind of plugs and wires?

Finally got a chance to play with the truck today. Found a strain on the small ground wire on the battery due to the battery having shifted in it's holder. Repositioned the battery and took the strain off this wire and the truck seems to run fine now. Still has a bank 1 ox. sensor alarm but the CEL is off and truck is running smooth and strong. Thanks for all the advice.

It was clean and tight, just had a strain on it from the battery shifting. This is the only thing I did to attempt a fix as everything else mentioned checked out OK. I hate problems like this where a clear cause cannot be found. I'll let you know if I have a recurrence. Hopefully, this was the fix......

Might want to check for voltage drop in along the cable and clean up and tighten the battery connections.

Hopefully it doesn't give you any more trouble.

I plan on re-securing the battery, too. We've been in a monsoon here for the past 2 days. Hopefully clear and no rain tomorrow.
