Swinging from a vine.
A girl I work with drives a 93 Wrangler with the inline 6. She knows I work on my Cruiser and asked me to tell her what was wrong with hers. I've never heard anything like it (granted, I'm no freakin master mechanic by any stretch of the imagination). It sounds like the engine is rattling internally at startup and idle, but goes away when she gives it gas. It doesn't sound like a valve problem... I'm in a suit, and the engine was covered with crud so I didn't mess with it too much. I know I'm not giving you guys much to work with, and I apologize... I just wanted to see if anybody has had a similar problem so I could give her some guidance.

Could be a buncha things..

Get your suit dirty ;)

Auto or manual trans? Quite a few auto's broke flexplates.

No but they are known to have noisy cam bearings and lifters. It usually makes all the ticking, tapping sounds where the distributor is. Alot of them make this noise and the motor isn't going to blow up.

My thoughts exactly. It seems like at least half of the HO 4.0s I've ever been around have the same valve tapping noise. AFAIK, no detrimental effect.

might want to check with wristpin, as I recall he spent years working as a jeep dealer tech, so he might have some input, but I am not sure if he checks in here in ot vehicle
