93-97 Short block engine.. can I get your advise? (1 Viewer)

I'm thinking of bidding on this item

I am just thinking of the future and down time of my FZJ80 when I go to replace the motor. It will be another 100k, but having a spare ready to go in would be nice.. quick swap and Im up and running again... (THINKING AHEAD).

If I buy it, I don't want to spend over $400 for shipping and the item... but being a newb to technical stuff on the 80... need advise.

The timing gear issue? could this be something wrong with this motor? Say the crank? I just dont want to buy something that is crap..

With these engines going over 300,000 miles needing only normal maintenance, you've got 140,000 trouble free miles. At normal US miles drive per year, that's right around 10 years of use. So, in 2015 you'll likely find your engine still plugging along fine, perhaps using a half quart more oil between changes and the block still sitting in the garage. To me, that's the 98% scenario with the remaining 2% scenario some type of catastrophic failure.

I think you'd be lucky to get that engine block to your house for under $500 in shipping charges atop whatever it sells for. I suspect it would be more cost effective to invest $500 in accelerated maintenance over the years. Would be great to have - don't get me wrong - but as a hedge against your engine wearing out I don't see the cost effectiveness.

My advice is if you want a spare engine, then buy a spare engine. Don't think I would start with just a block and crank.

Why would a motor that only has 56k on it need new rings and bearings?
Has it sat like that for 2.5 yrs! What kind of rust is on the motor by now?
If you want a builder motor then it might be a ok but I wouldn't put my head on that motor and run it.

Find a complete used motor so you can hear it run.
Plus, who knows if your head is going to be reusable come time to swap parts???

i think you should get it and build it then drop in in the fj45 with an auto to follow it mmmmm drool
