Hello all. I am a new member and this is my first post. I am the original owner of a 1991 FJ80.

While cruising at about 25mph earlier this week the engine went dead. No sputter or hesitation. I rolled to a stopped and crank it up and it started. I pulled into the closest parking lot and it went dead again. I started it again and drove it about two miles to my house without any problem. I had somewhere I had to go so I was not able to try starting it until the next morning. When I tried the next morning the engine would turn over but it never started.

The mechanic that I usually use towed it to his shop and took a look at it. He said it was not getting any spark at the spark plugs. He was not sure what the cause was and did not want to start replacing parts to try and find the cause. He recommended that I take it to my local Toyota dealership.

After two days at the dealership they tell me that the igniter and coil need to be replaced. They have quoted me $468 for the igniter and $108 for the coil and about $193 for labor. My question is do these prices seem reasonable? Are there aftermarket parts available?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Do a serach for the EFI relay as the 91s and 92s had a problem with the wireing to them and were burning up the relays . Theres also a TSB from Toyota on this subject

good luck with it

Yup; EFI relay should be your prime suspect.

1 more for EFI Relay.

I went through the same thing. 3 nights troubleshooting spark on my cruiser that was stuck 47 miles from home. Got tired of it & towed to a nearby stealership. Paid them close to $300 to replace that $13 part. OH, & they did do a hack job on upgrading the wire runnin to it.

Thanks for all the help. I passed the information about the EFI relay on to the dealership and sure enough that was the problem.

I have a follow up question regarding the EFI relay. I have had my Land Cruiser for 15 years without any problems with the relay. Why do you think I am having a problem now?

I still need to do the wire upgrade. If I drive for 15 minutes and shut the engine off the relay gets hot and it will not restart until it cools down. I carry a spare now.
