Hey Folks,
I am not sure what the issue is but my recently acquired camry has some powertrain issues all the sudden. It usually runs fine, but the muffler is loud (this happened after i got it). Every now and again, as in a couple of times a day, it will go through fits where it seems like there's a fuel delivery issue. I push on the gas and it bogs down, usually immediately stalling. For a minute i thought that it was the catalytic converter (hence the noise) but i am thinking an injector or something, because it will now do it when idling. Any known problems that could be the answer? It's only got 85,000 miles on it, and although rusty is in generally good condition. This is my daily driver so I can't afford to put it on hold until my dumbass can figure it out.

To get the ball rolling...

Check engine light coming on? Have you checked for codes?

As somewhat less than an expert, I would start by suspecting a sensor or connector (throttle position, air flow meter,...)

All you should need to read the codes is a paper clip :)

Double check the timing w/ the diagnostic box terminals jumpered like so....(bottom of page, disregard idle speed.....it's for a pickup)

Check and clean all main power and ground connections also.

Maybe it sat for a while before you got it? Have you changed the fuel filter?

Ray, it could have sat. My first inclination was to replace the fuel filter. It did seem to start doing it after i blew a hole in the exhaust somewhere which made me think CC was bad. So, tomorrow (today) will be a basic tune up and cleaning, and replacing the fuel filter. Hopefully that helps.

It couldn't hurt :grinpimp:

If you can find the specs for it, you should ohm test the coil cold and after it starts acting up.

FWIW I had a 91 camry V6 that ran like crap when I first bought it. I changed the spark plugs, wires, cap, rotor, oil job, flushed coolant, air filter, and it ran like a new car.

Your issue sounds similar to an air flow meter meter possibly on its way out, I had symptoms just like that on my 94 land cruiser and I changed the MAF and the problem went away.

Let us know the problem when you find it.

Good luck

changed the fuel filter today to no avail - it really seems like something that can be 'turned on and off' because it goes from good to bad, and then seems to 'snap' into good again. It always starts back up, but something's weird. It's like a vacuum leak or something. I'll keep picking on it over the next couple days. i've driven it from Columbus to Cleveland and back twice now; got to do the same for Thanksgiving. hopefully it's fixed by Thursday/

Check the gas tank, they are known to rust. You live in the rust belt so its possible you could be sucking up a piece of rust or chunks.

The best I can tell you either have injectors leaking, Fuel pressure regulator, or an O2 sensor problem. Any of them could cause it to run rich. The O2 sensor should trip a CEL though.

It,s ignition related .Pull the cap and look at the coil directly under the shaft for the rotor you will most likley see a bluish burnt looking spot on the coil if that "spot" is there put a coil in it .
