Hey everyone,

I have an 82 corolla that will start and run fine the first start of the day or after it has been sitting for a few hours. If I get it nice and warmed up and shut it down it wont turn over at all, not even a click from the starter. All other electricals work fine.

Does this thing have starter contacts? It sounds like this is the problem to me, i put in a new ignition switch in and that wasn't the cure. Instead of plug and play with parts i would like to narrow it down if possible.

Any ideas?

how old is the battery? an old starter when hot can require more juice so it could be your battery on the way out. check battery and ground connections and cable condition then try tapping the solenoid (if it has one) and then the starter (gently) with a mallet while somebody gives it juice. if it turns over whatever you hit last is going bad. otherwise i'd look at your wiring. the heating up might be putting worn wires over the edge.

More likely the starter than the battery, but it could be either. Generally, and it's a big generalization, hot restart problems are the starter.

a starter has more resistance when it's hot and a battery has less power when it's cold, and a fresh charge on hot restart.

It could just be the contacts, but it could easily be the commutator or the bearings.

thanks guys, I have a good battery. I guess my 3 yr old rebuilt starter is on the way out.

Jon
