Well, the time has come to let go of my trusty rusty BJ. I had visions of purchasing a newer rust free 60 and keeping this one around for parts. But damned if I could find one in the $10,000 range I could afford. I ended up buying a JDM Prado LJ78 instead, which is turning out to be an awesome vehicle, but of course none of the parts match.
I bought the BJ in 2000 for $4,300. I didn’t have a lot of cash and I needed a reliable workhorse to get me into the bush where I worked as a wilderness guide. So rusty landcruiser it was. The truck had 366,000km on the clock, an external leak on the head gasket, and a 4 spd with a wonky pilot bearing. I ran a compression check at the time and read 400, 360, 360 and 390… not bad. Shortly after, in the summer of 2000 I rebuilt the injectors and replaced the original 4spd with a H55 from Wayne at Crushers Rule. I then had Wayne (‘s crew) do the front end (kingpins, rotors, bearings, etc…). Since then it has only needed odds and ends, new exhaust pieces, front brake hose. In the last year i have put in a new clutch slave, and rebuilt starter and alternator. I also have a set of new OEM grade rotors and brake pads sitting in my garage.
Why am I selling? The body is RUSTY. The front 2 and back 6 body mounts are shot, the sill seams are mostly rotten. The wheel wells are separating, and every now and then a chunk of carcass falls off. You get the picture. Unless you are into a masochistic amount of fabricating this is most definately a parts vehicle.
On the up side, it has a sturdy PTO bumper. The frame is not bad, just beginning to sag on the rear driver’s side mount and the usual flaking on the insides of both rear C sections. Rear suspension is pretty bagged but still has about an inch and a half of arc. The tranny could use a set of gaskets and seals but is otherwise tight. The engine, well it has been problem free for years, but I recently started hearing a bit of a knock which disappears when it warms up so I’m guessing a wrist pin is going. And this is why I figure it is time to sell – better to drive to your door a decent block for rebuilding than tow a post-meltdown.
I love this rig. We’ve gone a lot of strange places together. But i guess the time has come.
I don't have a digital camera, but if you want pictures i can arrange them.
